Add-on Purchase Confusion

Recommended Posts

I knew that could happen one day ... I've accidentally purchased one product twice. I have owned Seattle landmarks already (purchased via ORBX some time ago) but purchased it again via MSFS marketplace. My fault! But what bothers me, I got a warning "product already in community folder" but this warning came  AFTER  I had clicked the BUY button just when it was going to install. Couldn't they show this alert earlier during the purchase process? How do you manage your payware add-ons. Is there any chance how I could undo my stupidness?

I live in fear of this exact situation...every time I open MSFS (after first visiting the MS store to check for updates related to the simulator) I open the content manager to look for product updates, then go to the Marketplace to see what's new or on sale and right there is the problem.

I can only see the content I bought from the Marketplace as being  'Owned' but not the products I have installed  - I have maybe 4 airports and at least as many aircraft purchased outside of the sim, and maybe 15 airports and 2 aircraft from the Marketplace and it's great to see them earmarked...but to learn that even at the point of purchase their is no indication - when clearly MSFS can see products installed there - until after the transaction has been completed is confusing. Why not help a brother out?

The programming to get the sim to recognise that two addons are the same, even if they are different update versions, would be interesting.

That said  if it can warn you after purchasing it should be able to do the same before purchase.

For me its basics, I maintain an excel spreadsheet of airports, sceneries and aircraft I have bought.  I make sure to update the spreadsheet the minute I buy something, I also track vendor and source including links to 3PD website applicable so I can trace where to go for updates.  Its a pain in the word not allowed but it works.  To be honest in the early days I had a dream everything would be bought through the official marketplace to negate the need to track everything at an anal level.  But that dream was dashed when I quickly realised everything bought through Marketplace has DRM and updates to everything are so slow compared to going direct - haven't bought anything from Marketplace for ages and won't do for reasons listed.

What I do to prevent myself buying something in the Marketplace when I've already bought it elsewhere is to use the Wishlist option: Click the heart icon for anything you've bought outside the sim. Works for me until such time as something official is done to prevent accidental double-dipping.

Keep a very simple spreadsheet and consult it before making a purchase....

Ditto. As with many maintenance "chores" the trick is to update that info every time.

The downside is that I added a price/totals column ... you really don't want to see that, LOL!
