Help with Overcloking

Hello.

I want to start trying to overclock my system.

I have a Maximus XII Apex mother board with a i9-10850K processor , I have a triple fan Corsair water cooler

Supposedly my CPU runs at 3.6 with turbo mode of 5.2

I would like to get in the range of 5.0

My question is in regards to the Cores.  Should I overclock all cores to the same Ghz? or Should I do cores zero and one and leave the other ones slower.

I only use it with P3DV5, but I also have MSFS2020 which I will use probably later when Prosim 737 is working better with MSFS.

I don't believe the Z490/i9-10850K supports separate clock multipliers for individual cores.  The "per core" terminology used by ASUS in their Z490 motherboard BIOS settings is not a separate clock per each individual core, but a clock speed for all cores together as a function of the total number of loaded cores.  AFAIK, currently only the LGA2066 CPUs (like the i9-10900X) running on the X299 chipset actually do true independent per-core clocking.

Your likely range of options with that CPU and cooler is all cores at a continuous 5.0-5.2 GHz...the AIO cooler is going to be hard-pressed to keep things stable much beyond 5.1 with HT turned on or perhaps 5.2 with HT off (assuming zero AVX offset and that the CPU can get there before it hits the voltage ramp).  The motherboard is designed for aggressive overclock tweaking, but the AIO cooler is not likely to take you out into that territory--temps are likely going to prove the limiting factor well before you need to resort to the Apex's advanced overclocking tweaks.  The Apex can usually wring a bit more performance out of your memory, but max-performing the memory will require some time and a journey up the steep end of the learning curve. 

That said, your 5.0 GHz target should be fairly easy to hit unless you're one of the unlucky few that roll craps in the CPU silicon lottery.  I run a 10900K with HT off here...I've found that P3Dv4/v5 is actually smoother than with HT on, and ten physical cores leaves little to be desired, at least in P3D.

After a bit of fluffing around with settings, I am now running my i9 10850K at 5.2GHz, 1.35V Vcore with HT off and it is solid running FS2020, with in-game temps < 60C on a 240mm AIO water cooler.

I was having sporadic system freezes at idle at anything over 4.9GHz before this but,  after a bit of Google detective work, fixed this by disabling C-states. I suspect my 750W PSU is not quite up to the task of rapid voltage switches with C-states enabled when OCing. With HT on, temps under load are 5-10C higher, FS2020 performance at a given clock speed is pretty much the same and even the least demanding of synthetic stress test apps will start failing above 4.9GHz, so I have HT off.

FWIW, I now use ASUS Real Bench as my stress testing app as it pushes the CPU, GPU and memory harder than flight simulators ever do with going into unrepresentative load territory on one particular component (eg. Prime95 with AVX on CPU is brutal and, IMO, way OTT). I run the stress test component for at least 30 minutes to be comfortable with new settings, with my current settings seeing my CPU get to 81C max.
