Nordics World Update (1.17.3.0) is now live!

I don't understand why they can't just get better satellite imagery for Bing maps. There's a handcrafted airport on Svalbard, looks pretty nice. But right next door to that you have this really horrible texture seam. And it's also obvious why it looks that way, because Bing maps shows the same seam between low and high-res satellite imagery.

Well, to a certain extent I can understand that it's difficult and/or takes time to obtain high quality satellite / aerial imagery. What really surprises me is the decision to use Svalbard for a handmade airport. Otherwise nobody would've noticed how awful the terrain looks up there 😉

I start to become critiical about the contents of the world updates.

Yes, one has to bear in mind that they are free updates, and the POI's the extra Airports and the corrected default ones, plus a better DEM are very welcome additions.

And Bush Trips to explore the areas, very fun to fly.

But there are some basic things that I wish we had seen included as well:

1) Adding ALL missing airfields in the updated areas. And tyding up ALL of their layouts (like ORBX does in their regional packs)

2) Adding better vector data to have more accurate coastlines and rivers that actually follow the underlying aerial image. There are many places in for example Alaska where you can still see straight lines and hard angles instead of lines that follow the actual coasts. The same goes for smaller rivers that you can spot accurately in the image that have water masks imposed over them that are straight lines.

3) Correcting of the vegetation so that you don't have trees where they don't belong in real life, be it a desert, mountains or like in this case in the polar region.

and do you know orbx asks 30(or something like that) dollar for one region..this is free, and will never have the quality and scope of payware.

its very simple.

The update went without a hitch and everything seems normal on my end. I still need to do some more testing, but so far so good.

MSFS

ESSA (Arlanda) are loaded in just a couple of NM from the airport, which means that fps drops quickly for a few seconds with stuttering as a result during the approach, why do they not think about this and make the airport loaded in further out so we can avoid low fps and stuttering during the approach?

If you use that airport often, can't you just cache the area?

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

Great idea, I will try that 👍

Might be worth a try, but as far as I know, caching doesn't really do anything for airports, as these are installed on your drive anyway. The manual cache in particular apparently only affects photogrammetry areas, at least that's what some testers found out so far.

I'm very much aware. But ORBX also had to add custom landclass-textures, a handrawn landclass file to it. This is all work that is not necesarry in MSFS.

Especially considering the Zendesk answer about the missing airports (planned to be added with regional updates), I would expect those to be added via the world updates. But they aren't.

Is it just me or do the countries covered by this WU now have autogen churches? Some might be misplaced, but to me it still adds to the immersion, good job.

All the European World updates so far have added autogen churches to their respective countries.

For all those who have forgotten the process

I know the average flightsimmer is male and over 60, but don't tell me that I have to look forward to being that forgetful that I won't be even able to remember an update process that I did 4 times already and the last one was only two months away. 😉

Funny, because that's exactly what I had to do this time: "buy" it in the free section of the market, and then install the subcomponents in the content manager. 😄

You have to hit “buy and download” not just ‘buy’

Ok, but maybe the area is loaded in earlier if you have catch the airport and a bit more of the surroundings, it might be worth a try.

I am disappointed with this update, there is no difference at all in the part of Sweden I live, the Bing maps are as bad as before, and full of weird visual artifacts like waterfalls in the lakes, and the tree drawing distans is still horrible with visual morphing.

That is something I noticed in the previous world updates as well.

They just don't touch those parts of the scenery, even though in my opinion those should actualyl come first.

It's like a layered cake. POI's are nice, but they are just the dressing, the cake itself is good aerial images, accurate vectordata and precise vegetation. Those, in my mind, are the groundworks that need to be there before you add anything else.

I am over 60 and male and I can't remember the last time I felt so insulted.

No, seriously, I can't remember 😄
