Hard working Asobo worked Saturday night to help PMDG

Recommended Posts

I love the effort and hard work Asobo is putting into MSFS.  From getting us a patch every month, to even working Saturdays to help PMDG fix a multiplayer CTD bug that showed up in the release of the DC-6:

Quote

We have had some input from our friends at Asobo (it is saturday evening for them- so this is incredibly kind of them) and they have indicated that they will be able to jump into the pool with us on this issue more thoroughly on monday- which is fantastic.

https://forum.pmdg.com/forum/main-forum/pmdg-dc-6-cloudmaster-forum/131452-20jun21-updated-notam-for-reports-of-ctd-msfs-multiplayer

And just like that, Asobo's help gave PMDG some hints on the multiplayer CTD bug and PMDG is already testing a patch for the multiplayer CTD bug.  This is another reason why I think MSFS will go far - not only does Asobo have a very grand view for MSFS, but they are also putting the hard work in to make sure their grand view of MSFS becomes reality.

great news for the DC6 owners, wish Asobo would be so quick for the CRJ owners, too....

Something must be it, meaning of partnership, seams all involved want to do it right, thumbs up 👍

I think I read that PMDG got little support from Lockheed Martin when developing their planes for P3D.  And then for X-Plane, I read that when PMDG released the DC-6 for X-Plane 10, they were blindsided by Laminar Research when X-Plane 11 came out shortly after the DC-6 release for X-Plane, which tanked a lot of the DC-6 X-Plane sales.

I guess what I read was all anecdotal, but it seems that PMDG was treated second or third class by Lockheed Martin and Laminar Research, while they get first class treatment by Asobo. It must mean a world of difference for PMDG to get this kind of first class treatment from Asobo.

Yeah, we're getting the benefit - no doubt, but let's not start genuflecting at the altar, right? It's money, and contractual obligations - in a very legal sense - not love, at play here.

No one is obliged to deliver a fix at absolute post haste. Which means working on a Saturday evening, even on a Saturday in general is not something taken for granted.

They're a commercial outfit commisioned to fulfil a contract.

A product sale is not a contract.  They are under no legal obligation to deliver anything more than the initial release.

So, yes, they do in fact deserve some thanks.

But I have bought PMDG stuff over the years and I know; it's commerial first and you, Pilot, second.

Oh really?! I thought they were doing it out of love. What a bummer.

So before I provide any laud for them I want to see the same effort to overnight correct the issues with avionics, ATC, ATIS/AWOS, live weather (all regions), cloud textures (don't get this weatherman started!), the multitude of airports with blobs of color on the ground instead of hangars and buildings, hangars at some airports that are two to three times too tall, incomplete SDK, lockout of proven flight simulator industry developers, etc. (its a longer list).  Perhaps they can address one per night.....

Im glad that MSASOBO were able to help asap when PMDG asked for help. Still waiting for the patch so I can fly the sim with other people. It's a bit lonely 🙂 Also looking forward to the vor needles working again when using the gns unit.

i didnt talk about Lockheed Martin or Laminar Research, the term "Official Partner" came up with MS2020 from MS/Asobo if iam right.

Mods, any reason you removed my perfectly acceptable post on this subject?

I believe they are working on the vast majority of these already:

  • avionics: they hired Working Title to do this; I think we should be seeing some major improvements over the next couple of releases.
  • weather/ATIS: there have been many improvements already over the past few months, and in many aspects the weather is far better than FSX; they've said they will be continuing to invest in the weather system going forward.
  • SDK: this is being continually improved - every week there is an update on the SDK, they seem to be working pretty closely with many 3P developers to add missing features.  I'm not a developer myself, but feedback from many developers (including but certainly not limited to PMDG) seems to be pretty positive - they clearly released the sim with the SDK in a highly unfinished state, but all the evidence is that they see the importance of a comprehensive SDK to support third parties and are working actively to achieve this.
  • "lockout of proven flight simulator industry developers" - has anyone actually been "locked out"?  I think there was one developer who in previous sims had products that integrate actual Garmin software with the sim and wasn't getting support from MS/Asobo (I could have misunderstood the details), but that's a highly specialised case where there may be legal or fundamental technical obstacles to integration with MSFS.  I could be missing other cases though - don't have time to follow all the threads!

ATC does indeed need lots of work, and so far they haven't really said they'd do anything to improve it.  I really hope there is an investment in that at some point.

I agree that some of the smaller issues (like hangar sizes) seem to take an inordinate amount of time to fix.  I hope this is just because they've all been swamped on DX12/XBOX and once that's out they will dedicate some time to going through the backlog of small but annoying issues like this.

That makes me chuckle big time!  Clearly Microsoft/Asobo have themselves placed likenesses of Garmin products into commerce.  They are there in the core MSFS product as it is installed.  If you gain any experience in trademark and copyright law you will quickly learn that is the basic fundamental.  The developer you mention has clearly indicated he has a defined relationship with Garmin.  There should not be an issue there with MSFS, but there is.  I do not believe it to be a legal issue.
