Virtualcol - Embraer out now

may well be on the wrong track here but for the life of me, I simply cannot find a stock standard or updated DC6 in real life, sporting anything like a GTN anything.  The original pilots/aircrew of the real thing knew how to navigate with out these modern amenities.  It is therefore, just a "sop" to simmers and really just an additional modern navigation device.  Hey, this is just my personal opinion so don't re-arm with missiles to shoot me down.

A GPS would of course be out of place in the era when the DC-6 was a mainline airliner, but for that matter so would the modern Bendix-King digital NAV/COMs and ADF, although those are simply modern versions of the original analog vacuum tube radios.

The r/w DC-6’s operated by Evert Air in Alaska are all equipped with GPS, with TAWS terrain display, TCAS and ADSB out. Those are all legally required for any large aircraft operating in commercial service in 2021 even if the base airframe is 65+ years old.

The GPS can be removed if one wants to navigate the old fashioned way.

Plenty of examples of old planes out there with a GPS unit retrofitted. That doesn't bug me especially since you can remove the GPS from the PMDG plane in the tablet.

,  It hurts the hobby

You review it for what it is, you vote with your own wallet but thats it,  you have no right to interdict what you don’t like to buy.

This hobby is more than 40 years old, I have been here almost all the time. MFS has introduced a new dimension as shown by the unprecedented rapid boom of pay- and freeware and unsavoury products will come along. People need reviews and experience sharing and the market will regulate itself . But if they still want to buy that kind of products after the reading and the watching, and they will,  let them have them.   They don’t  need any savior deciding what they should or shouldn’t buy. Your cancel culture is the real danger to this hobby, not Virtualcol.

Well, to be honest, a proper review ends in a discussion where the reviewer clearly states whether or not he suggests to buy this addon. And I see no reason why in any review of this chunk a reviewer should conclude that anybody should go ahead buying this. So, to me, it is totally legimate to issue a buyers beware for such "products" also in simming forums like here on avsim... But that is just my opinion...

We had this discussion on another thread about negative reviews. Buyers Beware reviews are what forums are made for (in a way, they are done for much more than that) specially in this day and age when You Tube reviews are not really motivated by the consumer interest and often done by sloppy reviewers (English has not the equivalent of the French word I am thinking of « rigolos »). Negative reviews are not toxic, willing to interdict a product is.

At the end of the day, though, it's all the reviewers opinion, which may end up being different from yours or mine. How many movie reviewers have panned movies that you ended up loving? In my case... probably most of them!

I have flown the Virtualcol offerings in FSX and P3D for quite a few years . Yes, they are somewhat  basic, but, to me, that helps to compensate for my lack of years of training and experience as an airline pilot. I find them fun to fly, for the most part, including the MSFS one. Sure there are some bugs, but nothing I can't live with. All in all, I like it. If someone doesn't, that's cool, but it doesn't mean that someone else shouldn't...

Just MHO, of course...

Hey Chock! Did you get this one??

I guess I copied it from his/her quote of your post. Sorry about that! I have to look a little closer, I guess. Thanks for the point-out!

I bought it based on Chocks excellent and balanced review. It cost me just £16 and I am sure I'll get more than £16 worth of use out of it. Would I prefer a study level E175? Of course. But until one appears, (if it ever does) this will have to do.

I just hope some one kindly does a Flybe livery for it otherwise I won't use it.😂

Yup, I think people need to be aware that Virtualcol are kind of like the modern day Abacus (although perhaps not quite so rough), so long as you know that for your money, you get a reasonably fun lookalike with basic functionality and a lot of liveries and usually one or two variants, then you won't be disappointed, because the dev never pretends to be anything other than that with the product catalogue.

I daresay someone will do a FlyBe livery. Never worked on those much myself, it was a separate line at Menzies which did the FlyBe stuff, but occasionally on the main line we did the odd FlyBe Dash 8 and Embraer. We do work on the BA City Flyer ones though.

Worth bearing in mind that Abacus might have banged out a lot of cack things, but they also made Flight Sim Design Studio, and I bet there's never been a piece of software more responsible for kickstarting add-on developers than that thing. Same is true for Virtualcol; you'll get people having a gentle introduction to airliners with their stuff, and then down the line they'll be buying a PMDG 747.
