How do you do a full install of P3D and save addons?

Featured Replies

My P3D v 5.2 keeps crashing.  First it was the DXGI crash with FSL A321.  I updated Windows and Drivers, also turned off the HTML menu but still crashing although for a different reason now (unknown).  I have only every updated the component installers but want to try a complete reinstall, just not sure how to go about it and keep all of my addons intact.  Any advice on this?

The way that I've found to keep mine intact is using lorby's and making sure all my addons are done via add on xml.  Also I make sure orbx is installed into a library.  Massive time savings.

5800X3D, 4090FE, 64GB DDR4 3600C16, Gigabyte X570S MB, EVO 970 M.2's, Alienware 3821DW  and 2  22" monitors, Corsair RM1000x PSU,  360MM MSI MEG, MFG Crosswind, T16000M Stick, Boeing TCA Yoke/Throttle, Skalarki MCDU and FCU, Logitech Radio Panel/Switch Panel, Spad.Next

I've been updating the last few P3D versions (point and full release) by doing a full uninstall and install of the new version. I only uninstall P3D, install the new version into the the same directory and then only do some minor stuff like adding a tweak to the cfg file or reapplying shaders. I never actually touch my addons and while I have most installed outside of the sim folder via the xml method, I do have some inside the main folder but these can generally just be left as they are. P3D only deletes the files it created and that have not been altered in any way, so all your addon files will stay where they are (including sim files that have been altered by the addon) and be readily usable after the reinstall (this however requires that you do not delete the leftover directories after the uninstall like the P3D manual recommends. I actually seem to remember the manual itself even says you can just leave the addons in the P3D main folder alone). Works fine and takes 10-15 mins tops.

If your Orbx addons like FTX Global, if you have any of those, are installed inside the main P3D folder however, you will need to reinstall these. If they are outside of your main folder in a library you only need to verify the files once for every texture addon within Orbx Central.

As an interim step I decided to just delete my P3D Generated Files.  This built back everything with exception of the Flight Sim Labs A320's.  Not sure why they do not show up again.  The addon folder is there with the addon.xml file.  I read on the FSL forum that some others seem to have the same problem with P3D v5.2 with it crashing, freezing.  Might need to wait for the patch to be fixed.

Anything with an add-on.xml file in the <Documents>\Prepar3D v5 Addon-ons folder will automatically be found and added back in, but add-ons installed elsewhere (like the FSL acft) need an entry in one of the two add-ons.cfg files pointing to the folder where the xml file resides.

Just uninstall and reinstall using the full installer. I deleted shaders and config files and when I started up all of my add ons were there ready to go.
