My own Tour De France - pt 1, LFAC to LFAT

Featured Replies

I realised that I really do have a huge number of airports and addons for France, and particularly since the regional update I've also felt the basic scenery was pretty impressive. Plus of course, being a native Brit I know nothing much for real about the place, only the typical English cartoon images. So I thought it was time to get to know the place a bit better. Don't know how far I'll get but I plan to try and visit a lot of the countryside and record all my trips for posterity! I also bit the bullet and bought the France VFR 'Obstacles' pack. I was interested when it became available but hesitated due to the price. But (as I knew I would) I weakened in the end and got a copy, and I'm glad I did - it does seem to add a lot of nice detail in a subtle and non-showy way. I liked the FVFR stuff in P3D for its detail, but it was a bear for performance and always looked washed out there, but this works well with MSFS.

Anyway, the plan is to do lots of small hops, pretty much at random, and just going where the fancy takes me. Very low and slow. Starting out at Calais-Dunkerque (LFAC) and following the coast round to Etaples (LFAT) in this first leg. I did the original flight in bright sunshine, but went for a misty morning for the replay and these shots.

So, here we are heading away from LFAC, towards Calais itself. Thought I'd take the Gravel in case I spotted any interesting fields to land in on the way

Looking on LNM I think this is Wimereux

Now over Boulogne. I seem to remember going there as a 13 year old on a school trip. My only memory of the place is myself and a mate buying flick-knives. I was a charming child.

Leaving Boulogne (unarmed, this time)

Nice atmospherics out there this morning.

Approacing Etaples, and the well-named Cote d'Opale airstrip (LFAT). Some really nice watermasking here

Haven't decided where to head on to next, but I'll probably follow the coastline for a bit yet. It always comes as a shock to me just how big France actually is compared to the UK. So lots to explore and I'm looking forward to it. One of the most wonderful things about MSFS for me is just pottering around over those 'nowhere in particular' areas and discovering all sorts of amazing views.

Enjoy!

Andy

Beautiful.  I wouldn't mind to get France VFR one day

Sounds like a great plan, Andy,...and it is indeed doable, here,...in a realistic manner...

My favorites, in this set, are #6 (hazy and cloudy countryside) and #7 (descending into the township)....

Cheers P. Gotten sidetracked the last couple of days as I discovered the POI Billboards stuff on flightsim.to and have been trying them out in this region. Nice stuff if you've got the space for them - they add poi markers from OSM data - masses of them and they make sight-seeing fascinating stuff. You can't toggle them on/off dynamically, unfortunately, but I've bee trying them turned on as I make and record a flight, and then turn them off when I replay the flight for screenshots etc. They open up a whole new level of exploration.
