Sabine tells us about solar stroms.

Featured Replies

Sabine herself had no idea that its not out of the question for a solar storm to be so intense that it puts life at risk on this planet. Imagine something many many times more powerful than the Carrington event!

Seen that video earlier today. I was a bit surprised by this sentence:

Quote

Mars once had an atmosphere, but since it's magnetosphere is very weak, it's atmosphere was wiped away...

Well, if Mars has no atmosphere any more, we can forget the nice parachute entries most of mars landers used from now on. 🙂

Ha, yes, Sabine messed up  a little there. She's German so we will pretend it was her difficulty with the English language and she forgot to add "most" of the atmosphere.

I must admit, like most people I was fully aware of the devastating impact a powerful solar storm could have on our planet in terms of our technological infrastructure but I wasn't aware that it's possible that the sun could generate a solar mega storm so powerful that it would be a threat to life on the planet.

but since it's magnetosphere is very weak,

We should just create more magnets and sink them into the Earth's core.
Either that or build a few more power stations to give an electromagnetic boost to our own magnetosphere... (/sarcasm)

Sabine is an excellent presenter, and I think her accent is charming. I'm personally looking forward to this emerging solar cycle as that means radio propagation is getting better every day!

Yes, I really like Sabine. She's a no nonsense physicist who's famous (infamous) for not standing for any nonsense theories from her fellow scientists.

Great idea. Lets start manufacturing neodymium magnets by the million and getting Elon to use his boring machine to dig a big hole down to the core. It could work!  😁

Alternatively, we could use the cheap and cheerful option by lowering a few packs of Duracells into the deepest coal mine we can find

Hmm... that wouldn't generate a magnetic field though Chris. New suggestion please.

That England defeat must have affected me more than I thought, Martin! Not sure why I was thinking that Duracells were magnets!!:blink:

Yeah you can't fool me. I wasn't born yesterday you know. Clearly you are privy to the "tic tac aliens" secret knowledge and are aware of the fact that the Earth is hollow and really an alien spaceship. We are just a carbon based infestation on the outer hull.

You want us to throw our batteries into the plasma exhaust port so the aliens can use the power to fire up their zero point modules.

Don't you! Admit it! Pesky alien lover. Traitor!
