Single disk / partition or...

Recommended Posts

In my new rig I have a single, 1TB NVme 2 SSD disk, and while I did buy a 2nd 500 GB NVme for the sims, I ended up rushing my installation and droping it all into partition = disk = C :  in the 1TB disk...

In the past I used a dedicated system partition, and whenever possible would install flightsims into a 2nd disk / partition, and even used to have a separate partition for the cache !

Question: does it still matter ? Should I still install Win 10 and applicatons into different partitions and preferably disks too ?  What are the real advantages these days ?

I have 32 GB RAM too.

Thanks for any comments / recommendations !

With a SSD, partitioning does not help as there is no physical, spinning disc, so it does not matter where files are located on a SSD.  With a HD, yes, you want the OS located on the first partition so all of its files stay on the outermost portion of the HD where read and write times will be the fastest.  My current computer came with a 1 TB M2 SSD, so I put Windows and FSX on that drive.  For any future sims, I will likely put them on a separate SSD.

This post illustrates exactly why I advice against multiple partitions on a single drive. There are no technical benefits and there are better ways to organise your different sims. If you really want a separate drive letter, you can use the SUBST command to assign a drive letter to a folder.
