for some, the update was horrible seemingly, for others its heaven.

No mystery there.

Basically if you had a PC that had a CPU that struggled, you were low on RAM.  and and could barely maintain 30 FPS - but for some reason had a reasonable GPU and a HDR monitor or TV you would love SU5 as you would get a much needed performance boost and your graphics if anything might even improve.

On the other hand if you were already getting 45 to 60 FPS on ultra but only have an SDR Monitor or are a VR user you would hate the patch. You are getting a performance hike you do not need and a graphics nerf in the case of SDR or a performance hike spoilt by a graphics nerf if you are a VR user.

That said, the improve performance and the awful graphics on SDR screens seem mainly unrelated.  The performance seems related to CPU and memory optimisation whereas the graphic issues seems to be a misguided attempt to optimise the game for 4K HDR10 Television users that had unwanted side effects for SDR PC users.

I miss the good 'ol days when you could install the version of software you like and not be forced to "upgrade" it. And if you upgraded and it broke, you could just reinstall the original version from disc.

This whole mandatory upgrade system has ruined my own MSFS experience as well. Had I known it would have gone the direction it has, I don't think I would have bought it, at least not until it's properly finished and the huge updates come to an end.

Oh well, maybe five years from now it will be better?

FWIW, Flight Simulator isn't the only game I own that has gotten worse after an update instead of better. It seems to be a systemic problem in the gaming industry.

I wish I could even tell what the update is like (as far as flight and graphics).  For now, I haven't been able to get any aircraft off the ground.

  • TBM throttle control is nuked
  • G36 (several versions) - unable to rotate on takeoff.  It appears that the elevator trim has been nuked or is so far off of normal now I can't fly
  • Trying C172 next (crossing fingers)

I fall precisely in that category. I have a 4790K CPU (modestly overclocked) coupled with a 1080Ti 11GB GPU. With the performance increase that came with SU5, I can now crank my LOD sliders all the way up to 200 and still maintain a locked frame rate of 30, which I could never do before. For me, the resulting improvement in graphics quality is substantial. The sim now looks better than anything I have seen to date.

I also just purchased an HDR monitor, and I have to say that the improvement in colors and lighting are light years beyond what I had before.

I would have to disagree though with the statement that optimizing the game for 4K HDR10 TVs is “misguided”. Now that I have seen what HDR can do, as a long-time “SDR PC user”, I could never go back to SDR. If Asobo has optimized the game for HDR, I can only say “more power to them”.

And yet....when it works....it looks absolutely stunning (agree about the ridiculous amount of washout when your viewing from certain angles  and times of day...I just try to limit flying now to dawn/dusk only where the washout is not nearly as bad as at high noon).

Just had a fantastic multiplayer flight with a good friend as we flew from St. Martin to San Juan...here we are tucked in tight....quite a feat with these lumbering behemoths LoL.   We did get hit with the washout though in cockpit view...that HAS to be fixed!

Yes, we're flying the same paint...but we're also testing it for the painter...he's got some things to fix still. 😉

Its moments like this in simming that keep me on the glass-half-full side. 🙂

yes , that is unfortunately true a bit.

good testing is a very costly business so they do it not so good and think, we send it to the users and patch it along.....

Overcast works as well.

Clear Skies, fly at dawn/dusk or heavy overcast will mitigate the problem.

Dude!  How can I join your next flight? Formation flying is my passion and the DC-6 is my favorite ride - also have that same livery!

with even the lighting model changed. It did need brightening under the clouds a bit, but something has gone a bit astray somewhere.  (I don't have the benefit of an HDR monitor to try to correct it).

Before SU5, I had 30 fps smooth with most things working and great visuals.  I was just hoping the pauses were reduced.
I now have 45 fps (not really needed), but now I have this frame rate in a sim I don't really want to fly in, and sometimes can't! (CTD's now).

I'm having the same issues with everything outside too bright and washed out (and no HDR monitor). I thought it might be the change I'd made to EyeAdaption, but changing it back made no difference at all. Turning off Bloom does help somewhat. I have also locked my FPS to 30 in the sim as that is smooth to my eyes.

Yes.  Struggling with it for sure - out of options now!

Last couple of days I also found myself whining much more than usual. Believe me, I'd rather just say "It's perfect" and go fly.

Same here, i was really looking forward to great things, the sim was improving, vastly improved aircraft were starting to come to fruition, everything looked great and on track to be a stunning piece of work...... THen !! Back to last August is how i would sum it up.

If you had read the pre-release info on MSFS last year, you would have known that this is a 10-year project with scheduled updates on a frequent basis. You would also know that in a project such as this, the updates have to be mandatory because each one builds on its predecessors. As for updates making things worse rather than better, this is undoubtedly true for some, but not for others. You cannot generalize on this issue.Computer systems vary, as do their operators' skills and patience.

Hi,

Did you know that the power lever logic for the TBM was changed in this update?   You need to have the propeller axis assigned, in order to move the throttle over to the main idle range.   (If you don't have a spare axis, you can assign keys to "Set Prop Max" and "Set Prop Min" and those will also move it over.

The G36 and C172 are both flying fine for me.  After the update, my controller functions were a bit borked.  Closing the sim, unplugging them, re-plugging them and re-starting the sim fixed the issue.   Might be something like this affecting your trim, if you have it assigned to an axis or button.
