Avsim down in parts of the world?

Some people are more tech savvy than others. I flushed my dns, reset my dns in IP4 properties, cleaned my browser cache, tried different browsers, all day yesterday. No luck. Today, obviously, it works. Didn't think to reboot the modem, I admit. Finally gave up.

You'd be surprised at the number of cheap ISP-provided routers that do heavens knows what with a loss of power.

It's also interested to see just what a train wreck most people's DNS configuration is.

Cheers!

That's a bit weird. A while back I used to reboot my ISP's router every night. A bit paranoid yes, but router fires have been known. No issues whatsoever. Did it with several routers.

Switching them off from time to time  is actually beneficial.

Easiest way - use dig web interface.

That's what I use whenever I have to change any of our 20+ domains ...

After rebooting the router, still no success. I can only reach Avsim with my smartphone and not via WiFi or PC.

Is it a case where Avsim does not load at all, leading to a “server not found” or “timed out waiting for a response” error, or are you still getting the message that “this domain has expired”.

If you are still getting the “expired” message, that would point to a DNS cache problem on your local computer. If you simply can’t make a connection to Avsim at all, it could be a problem with the route from your ISP to Avsim.

I sent him the IP address to insert into his web browser address bar.  Even that did not work for him. 🤔

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱
Trying to keep peace and harmony and the will of Landru on the site seems to be a full time job!

Thanks for your efforts - I still get this page where I get the offer to buy the AVSIM domain...!

Now, everything is back to normal for me! Thank you for your efforts!!

The registration for the domain Avsim.net expired on Friday, August 6th. When this happens, the domain registry will change the DNS entry for Avsim.net to point at a generic page indicating the registration has expired.

For those unfamiliar, DNS is the the part of the internet backbone that translates domain names like “Avsim.net” into the actual numeric IP address of the server hosting a particular web sit. In that regard, it is sort of like a telephone directory that correlates names and street addresses to the numeric telephone number active at a particular address.

When the domain registrar modifies top-level DNS for a given domain, this change propagates to all other domain servers on the internet, which usually takes several hours, or even a day or two.

The registration has been renewed. The new expiration date is now August 6, 2022 - but the DNS change back to the original Avsim.net IP address has not yet propagated to all internet name servers. If I connect to Avsim on my iPhone using my home WiFi, which in turn is connected to my Spectrum cable modem, I get through with no problem. If I switch off WiFi and connect to the internet via Verizon Wireless, I get the expired domain message. This indicates that the Verizon DNS servers have not yet updated to show that Avsim is back online, while the Spectrum DNS servers have already updated.

Thank you for that explanation.  I didn't know that.  And now I do 🙂

Over 10 years here and AVSIM is still my favourite FS site :-)

Interesting, thanks!
