Additional folders in Packages

Recommended Posts

Hey guys - does anyone know if it's safe to add additional folders in the Packages directory? I want to add a "_mods" folder there to store inactive mods/sceneries/tools/etc. So then I can easily swap into Community folder.

Will this mess up the sim? Will it activate anything in there? THanks

Not sure how far down it will drill but it could read any "*.json" files it finds and load an addon(s) you don't want activated. I'd use a location (folder) completely outside the Packages or Communities folder to avoid any snafus. No reason to tempt fate.

Addon Linker was made for this type of situation. Available at "flightsim.to"

thanks for that link, yeah i've checked this out before. but i'm a manual guy i prefer to do everything by hand (always have in all my sims/games). maybe just a masochist 😉

Give it another go. Work smarter, not harder. Plenty of other areas in this sim to bang your head against.

that's what I thought to until I actually gave MSFS addons linker a try and it changed everything. Don't know how I managed to get by without it.

Yes you can put other folders in Packages folders. MSFS will ignore them. You can store all your addons in that other folder, further divided into more subfolders. Then just tag all the addons and drop them in and out of the community folder and the other folder(s) you created and put in Packages folder. I do this all the time.

In my experience MSFS doesnt care about any file outside the Community folder. Everytime I need MSFS boot with a clean Community folder, I just rename it and let MSFS create a new one at starting,- MSFS just ignores all the content of the renamed folder.

I keep all my unused addons in the packages folder with no issues.
