MSFS From Innsbruck to Locarno in Northern Italy

The plane is the long-range strategic bomber and reconnaissance/maritime patrol aircraft Me 264, developed during WWII for long distance flights of up to 15,000 km (9.300 miles). Two prototypes were built and later destroyed during allied bomb runs. After that, the project was abandoned, as Messerschmitt was asked to concentrate instead on the further development of the Me 262 fighter jet.

This is the FSX model by Thomas Ruth, ported over to MSFS. I also upgraded the VC.

Great series and history lesson!

Never knew of this unique aircraft and when I saw the pics before reading, I thought this thing was a glider they stuck engines on based on those high aspect-ratio wings!    May have been best they never got her into production....I can imagine one good up/down draft in a storm and those wingtips snap off, especially if she just took off with full fuel and they had tanks to the tips, full of fuel (which you figure because of her mission design...all that fuel has to go somewhere...the fuse reserved for bombs I'd imagine).

You gotta' wonder what Messerschmitt were thinking when they got the orders from the Reich to build this.  "We're going to build planes to attack the US, they'll be 24+ hour missions, carry only 2,000lbs of bombs, and will be flying over the well defended targets at 100mph with obviously no fighter support."  If I were a Luftwaffe bomber pilot I'd be like "Oh yeah....sign me up for this mission!" 🙄

Trials showed numerous minor faults and handling was found to be difficult. One of the drawbacks was the very high wing loading of the Me 264 in fully loaded conditions at some 356 kg/m² (73 lb/sq ft). Comparable aircraft, such as the Boeing B-29 with a wing loading of 337 kg/m² (69 lb/sq ft), the redesigned He 277 at 334.6 kg/m² (68.5 lb/sq ft) and the Ju 390 at 209 kg/m² (43 lb/sq ft) had lower wing loadings. The relatively high wing loading caused poor climb performance, loss of manoeuvrability, stability and high take-off and landing speeds. The first prototype was not fitted with weapons or armour but the following two prototypes, the Me 264 V2 and V3 had armour for the engines, crew and gun positions.
