October 8, 20214 yr I had purchased a new PC a few months back, which is in my signature. With this configuration I can run the sim on ultra (1440p) and get 60+ fps everywhere. The problem I had was heat. Specifically, CPU heat. Now I know that the Intel 10850K CPU runs hot, but I have really been struggling to keep the temps below 80C. My PC has turned into a space heater, so I have been trying a few things to sort it out. First, locked frames at 60. That helped somewhat. Then I swapped cases. My old PC had a much larger full tower case, and that swap (royal pain) resulted in maybe 1-2 C reduction. Then I purchased new thermal paste, which was maybe good for 1-2 C reduction. But I was still not happy, as my temps after flying maybe 45 minutes would be pushing 80C again. Basically, I didn't witness my temps stabilizing. The longer I flew, the higher the temps went. This is with water cooling. I have also underclocked my CPU (4.7 GHz) to drop the voltage, all that did was slow down the temp rise. It is really unfortunate because having a PC that can run this sim in all its glory needs to be handicapped to keep the temps down. Currently the only thing I have found that really makes a difference is locking the frames at 36. Now I don't know if this will stop the inferno from erupting after say 3-4 hours, but at least now the temps start rising slower from the mid 60s instead of the mid 70s. The next thing I can try is swapping the water cooler for a D15 air cooler, but outside of that limiting frames and CPU voltage seem to do the trick. I think I got a real lemon of a CPU, although honestly I cannot tell any hit to MSFS from running 5.1 GHz or 4.5GHz. The FPS is exactly the same . The smoothness is exactly the same. But...locking FPS at 36 is noticeable. Anyone who tells you there is no difference between 60 and 30 FPS is not looking closely enough. I think I am going to try to underclock the CPU even more to see if I can unlock the frames and keep heat in check. I am just a bit concerned with stability, as I did see some CTDs when underclocking. Ugh. Edited October 8, 20214 yr by RobJC 7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 96GB DDR5 | 4K G-Sync | Win11 Pro
October 8, 20214 yr It might be worth to double check the air flow in your case. Once I put fans in my case the wrong way around and all of them were blowing air inside and none extracting the heat. It took me a while to figure it out…

October 8, 20214 yr Interesting findings, but why do you want your CPU to stay at 80 C? Capping your FPS at half just to shave off 5 C at the CPU seems like a waste to me. Mine runs at 85C with the Noctua NH-D15 cooler. Works just fine, it's not overclocked other than XMP is enabled. So it's running at the temperature it's designed for. October 8, 20214 yr Moderator 80C is safe for that cpu BUT if you're getting that running MSFS with a watercooler - something is not right. I'd suspect the thermal paste or the cooler. Running msfs with all the bells and whistles on, you should be around 70C. I have my 7700 clocked to 5ghz with liquid cooling and I have to work to get 85C during a stress test so, although it's an acceptable range for your CPU, I'd still rework the heat system. October 8, 20214 yr Some boxes are not worth what was spent to make them. I ran into that with an offbrand ABS Computer. Nice price and took the chance. It has 3 intake fans on the front (but it can hardly pull in any air from the front) 1 outflow fan in rear (and no expel fans on the top) It needs two up there. Yeah, totally agree that 80C is safe but with water cooling, I was expecting 70C. I think the water cooler might not be that great (Thermaltake 240mm). 36 minutes ago, turbomax said: how can "underclocking" cause stability problems? did you mean undervolting perhaps? that can indeed cause hardware crashes. not overheating, but hardware crash from providing not enough power to the CPU. Nope, underclocking. I set all the cores locked to 4.5 GHz now, which after testing just now for an hour kept my temps at 68-70C. The temps seem stable, and I honestly cannot tell any difference in performance. But on the motherboard I have when you drop the clock speed it lowers the voltage. Right row voltage is below 1.2. 32 minutes ago, Ixoye said: Why does the i9 10850K run so hot? my I9 10900k runs att 55-60 with a Noctua D-15 I have no idea. Case has great air flow. October 8, 20214 yr Author I basically have one large intake fan in the front/bottom, one large intake fan on the side, then two exhaust fans on the top (water cooler exhaust) and one exhaust fan at the back. Another thing I can try is to add two intake fans in the front behind the drive mesh, since I really have no need for those. 7950X3D | RTX 4090 | 96GB DDR5 | 4K G-Sync | Win11 Pro
