New PC build for Flight Sim

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Now that I finally found a bit more time, I was thinking of building a desktop that will be able run the sims on slightly better graphics. Previously I was running FSX on my razer blade 14 (GTX1060) on low graphics setting and no add-on and was not doing much simming. I'm currently looking to build a desktop that will be able to support MSFS 2020 and maybe either Xplane or P3D and was wondering if these specs are any good. Any thoughts on the following set-up?

CPU: AMD 5600X
MOBO: ROG Strix B550i Gaming
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 32GB
SSD: Samsung 980 PRO 500GB
CPU Cooler: Cryorig C7 or Noctua NH-L9x65
Case Fan: be Quiet! Silent Wings 3 120mm
Case: Lian Li Q58
PSU: Seasonic Focus SGX 650 SFX 80+ Gold
GPU: Asus ROG-STRIX RTX3060 O12G V2 Gaming or MSI RTX 3060 GAMING X 12 GB GD5

Looking at a small form factor simply because I do not have much space in my room and also I like how small estate space an ITX build is. Cheers!

Hi Kelvin,

Specs look pretty good, although if you are planning to run at least 2 sims with all their addons , I would be considering a much larger capacity SSD to host all that stuff or invest in a 2nd SSD. 250Gb is likely going to be too small once you have all your stuff installed.

I would recommend  a 1TB if you are serious in running 2 or more sims or add a 2nd SSD and leave the 500Gb (or potentially a 250Gb) for Windows OS etc any other non-sim apps you want to install.

Note: That Asus mobo should support adding a 2nd SSD to an M2 slot but it's worth reading the mobo manual to determine if any SATA slots are disabled as a consequence of using the additional M2 slots which can occur with certain mobos.

I hope that helps.

Should be a very nice system. You can see my specs below and my comp runs MSFS nicely with mid-high settings, and your proposed system is quite a step up from mine.

Hi Mark,

Yeah, I do have an existing 1TB M.2 that I plan to use to store the sims and addons. The 250GB (or maybe a 500GB to be safer) is solely for OS. Thanks for the heads up on the m.2/sata support limitation on the asus mobo though.

Swap the Samsung 980 for a 1tb Sn550 for about the same price

Hi Kelvin,

You are welcome. Yes that sounds like a good plan.

God luck with your build.

@Charlatan

Out of curiosity, how does zotac cards match up with the likes of ROG Strix or MSI Gaming Xs?

My search threw up the latter 2 as the best performing cards available for 3060s but here in Singapore they are much harder to get (looking past the fact any RTX30s are generally hard to get everywhere) compared to Gigabtye or Zotac cards.

@kelvinlimwei

Would take a Zotac any day of the week.  Preclocked out of the box, 5 year warranty.  They are my card of choice, been using them since the GTX460 and never had a problem with any of them
