Am I missing something?

Just built my new pc, and I'm getting worse fps than my old pc with the same version of p3d (v5 latest HF), same addons, same in game settings.

New pc: ryzen 5900x, asus strix 3090, 64 gb corsair dominator platinum 3600, samsung 980 pro m.2

 

old pc: 9900k (oc 5.0ghz), 2080ti, 32 gb tridentz z 3200, samsung 970 evo m.2

 

Any ideas? Is it possible the ipc uplift with the 5900x at 4.5 ghz can't compete with the 5.0 ghz overclock of the 9900k?

In a modern game probably a decent move but old P3D needs cpu single core.

Different CPU architecture.  MicroSoft's flight sims, and that would include P3D as it's core is based on MicroSoft's FSX, tend to run best on Intel CPU's.

Your 5900X is decently superior to the 9900k.

Did you clean install windows?

Did you install the AMD chipset drivers? [Super important!]

Is your bios setup correctly? [XMP, etc]

Did you install the correct graphics driver and set it up correctly?

And lastly a tip: Do not overclock your Ryzen. The AMD algorithm used for it's processors is very clever, and already does a fine job extracting maximum performance from your chip.

Clean windows install. Updated the chipset. Only change in bios is xmp enabled. Clean install of 3090 graphics driver DDU. It's just worse than the 9900k. I actually can't believe it, but it is.

Unless something changed with v5 (which I don't use) FSX and previous iterations rarely used any of my other cores.  Maybe it's not the same for you?

FSX maybe, but v4 and v5 have used numerous cores for many years.  I've seen substantial incremental improvements running P3D over first 4 cores, then 6, then 8, and now 10.

It's still true in some situations that core 0 single thread performance is important, but it's absolutely wrong to say P3D doesn't use multiple cores.

In my use case my 10850K @ 5.1Ghz with a 3090 rocks along at a solid 50fps at well under 80% useage except in heavy scenery areas with an exceptionally demanding a/c.

Weird...I ran v4 quite a bit and never really noticed much activity on my other cores.  Only had 4 physical cores though.  Glad to know it uses more cores.

In P3D v5, all my cores are used, although core 0 is the most heavily used.

4.5 Ghz peak?  Can you run the freeware version of Cinebench R23 with single core and multicore and report back the results?  What have you set in your BIOS/EFI?

Are you using AMD Ryzen Master?  Not recommending it, just curious as I've had poor results with it's "Auto" tuning process and "game" mode etc.

Windows 10 or Windows 11 ... there is a bug for AMD processors in Win 11 which was "fixed" with a couple of patches (have not confirmed since I'm not running Win11 on any PC that matters).

As per great questions above, is your RAM profile setup correctly?  Drivers? etc.

Here are my results from 9900K default XMP 2.0 profile:

For single Core the AMD 5950X has 25% increase over the 9900K.  This is for the 5950X not the 5900X but that's difference is core count primarily and anything over 8 cores there are diminishing returns for flight simulators (all of them).

In P3D V5.x when optimizing settings/add-ons for a good balance in CPU/GPU utilization, I'm seem about a 22% FPS increase with improved timeframe consistency.  P3D V5.x uses DX12 API so it will be more efficient with threading and you should see good improvements.

I keep hearing that FSX will utilize one core only, but that has not been my experience, at least with FSX Acceleration and now FSX Steam Edition.  I ran Acceleration on a 4-core CPU, core 0 stayed maxed out and the other 3 cores were active with scenery.  I am now running FSX Steam Edition on an 8-core CPU and all 8 cores are active.
