That would be a good idea if they decrypted just the config files because then skilled modders can get going on them 🙂

I hope the rest of the files stay heavily encrypted permanently though. There will be an almighty (and justified) uproar from those who paid full whack for Premium Deluxe and then see the modded planes from it appear online.

Not from me there wouldn't. if openning up the encrypted files would allow modders to actually fix bug and then create work like the WT CJ4 & JPL C152 mod for the additional planes then I'm for letting everyine have access. (of course it won't happen).

The modders would only release the modded files for the premium aircraft if allowed (config files etc.) not the whole model.

As we know, the classic C172 is 'protected' but people still do mods for it, it is simply that people who don't own the C172 classic can't use the mods, as they have no base plane to use it on.

They’re probably using the base 172 files as a basis. There’s a longitude improvement mod that is based off the CJ4

That's right Tuskin.  The point I was trying to make (not very well reading my post back ) is that just because people put mods out for the premium planes, it doesn't mean people who haven't paid for them get to use them without paying for them, as they won't have the rest of the MSFS base files on their system to go with the modded files.

I miss the f-18 from FSX so that would be my first choice.... looking forward to it coming to the sim

Kind regards,

I would also love a few little fixes as well if they can put them in.

For instance, I am still getting the tiles appear and disappear around the plane at low level for things such as the water masks (St. Barts shows this well), and I think it is affecting Bijan's Autumn land masks as well in the same way.

In the last couple developer updates, Jorg indicated that un-encrypting just the config files for the deluxe/premium aircraft might be a strong possibility and they were looking into it.

That's a good sign. The Licensing and port over threat from premium to standard that is pointed out above and below is not relevant to my reasoning at all. Almost no-one attempts to port over a whole aircraft then release it. I am referring not to the base aircraft but to the usually editable config files. Strictly speaking modders should not upload model or other core files for a given default within their mods, but occasionally they do (for example LOD and associated files). The key is not to upload items that could enable someone to cobble together a whole aircraft.

Traditionally Microsoft has openly allowed editing and modding of their material as long as that didn't make it possible to assemble a whole aircraft from that mod. Encryption of config files does not make sense as no-one could possibly use those files to do any licensing damage, which is why no doubt Asobo has discussed the possibility of opening up the config files for editing. If they did this I am certain it lead to more sim sales - indeed it was a mixture of mods and addons that kept FSX going for many years.

Again, it’s also to prevent piracy. The Encryption stops someone from just downloading the files online somewhere and get full access to the planes/airports.

That’s probably why they need to be selective of which files they decrypt

Of course they need to be selective about which files are non-encrypted.  That's the entire point of this conversation.  We are simply talking about getting full access to the config files.  Nobody is suggesting Asobo should open up the entire library of files associated with the premium aircraft (which would allow piracy of those aircraft)

This is it.  It is mainly about anti-piracy for the additional paid product (Premium version aircraft etc.).

Also, I can't see how it can be about the licencing thing so much, as Jorg is saying.  Because the Cessna 152, and C172 G1000 are not protected and have been modded, the C152 quite extensively.

But the C152 Aerobat and C172 classic remain protected due to them being 'premium' products, that is all.  Cessna would surely be just as upset with the other two 'unprotected' aircraft being modded if it was a problem for them.
