P3D performance with new Image scaling & sharpening?

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

I see Nvidia have released their latest GRD driver (496.76 WHQL) and it now contains an improved render scaling and sharpening feature.

https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/nvidia-announces-updated-open-source-image-scaling-sdk.html

The new feature can be accessed directly from NCP or alternatively via GeForce Experience if you have that installed.

Has anyone had the opportunity to try this out yet and is there any noticeable difference in performance?

Note: This is independent of DLSS and should run on any game is my understanding.

Regards,

I too would be interested in hearing about anyone's experience of the new driver functions.

I've been using DSR for a couple of years now, a NVidia scaling function that can be applied to any game.

What it does is add screen modes greater than that of the monitor and scaled to fit.

My 1920x1080 native displays can now do 2560x1440 and 3840x2160.

Does tend to get a bit heavy for the GPU on the AA side of things though, maybe 5 to 30% more GPU required depending on the AA and scenery and a bit taxing on my 1070Ti to the point I have to drop down to SSAAx2 (from x4) on occasion. That said the AA is better anyway due to the scaling effect smoothing the rough edges so to speak.

But I can fly in 4k @ 30 fps vsync'd over scenery where there are not too many custom 3d objects, usually though I stick to 2560x1440.

And I manage other GFX configs such as sharpness, lighting, HDR, etc via Reshade as reshade allows for on the fly realtime adjustments.

2560x1440 pic on 1920x1080 native display.

Thanks for posting.  I'm always curious how this actually works.  I mean how can you upscale something from 1440p to 4k if the monitor itself is incapable of showing 4K?  This is a genuine question.

thanks.

It's fairly straightforward, though power-consuming, to do this in real time on a modern GPU. Each frame is rendered internally to a frame buffer of 3840 x 2160, and then the GPU scales the finished frame down to 1920 x 1080 for display. Rendering the frame at a higher resolution provides better scaling of polygons and other effects, and then the down-sampling can be done using a GPU-native transform which avoids pixelating the image. The result is an image that can look sharper and more detailed than one natively rendered at 1920 x 1080. Also, you can capture video at 4K, so if you're recording video and you want the highest quality but your display itself is only 1080p, or if you're adding rendering effects (like P3D's infrared filter), you can grab the video frames directly from the framebuffer. In the early days of VR (we're talking Oculus Rift PDK here), you would use DSR to sharpen up the image going to the headset, because the headset displays were relatively poor resolution. There are much better native solutions for that nowadays (including DLSS).

I've got a 1080p monitor connected to a 3060 12gb card with the latest drivers. Can someone tell me how do i upscale to 1440p?

Well, if you want to trial DSR there's this thread.

Otherwise NVidia have their release blurb with info on their new functionality.

Seems like it may be for full screen only?

I have tried this driver and saw indeed a little increase in FPS BUT my image quality has been reduced massivly. Everything is unsharp now (but I have activated sharpening xD)

Reverting back to my previous driver.

Loaded new driver.

Doesn't work for me. Option is not available on menu. Not even sharpening as it used to be.

Ian, which version and was it the Game Ready Driver version you installed?

It was 496.76 and yes the G.R.Driver. The only thing I didn't do was to use DDU but I did use Clean install and cleared shaders.

Thanks. It gives me the new driver but unfortunately it seems that my system cannot take advantage of scaling, as there is no option for this. I will revert to my old drivers.

Well, I was able to get NIS running once (and only once) in P3D windowed mode, confirmed with the “NIS” overlay indicator on.  Without much testing, it seemed to give me about 5 extra FPS when at the gate at FSDT ORD and LAX.  I was briefly optimistic.

Exited the sim to try and replicate, but haven’t been able to get NIS to activate since.

The joys of windowed mode, just like Vsync and Gsync, and other GPU features.

I am also running a 1080, I had the option, but even if I activate it its not working :D

496.13 currently the best stable driver for me.
