My main problem with the available ATC addons is that they require way too much user input. You have to almost script the entire flight yourself before you can fly. With one you have to manually enter every point of every sid and star. Literally! Because the addon doesn't read the database.! By the time you can start flying time is up already and all the surprise of what ATC will do is gone.

PROATC only needed a flight plan and did everything itself, up to assigning the correct procedures at the correct time. Thanks to that it felt very real. You didnt know what was ging to happen. The other ATC addons are a  it bit like a taperecorder: It's as if you record the entire flight yourself and then play it bit by bit during the flight.

Besides, none come close to the sound of default ATC...

EDIT
In addition to what I said: for 'button users' ProATC also had an absolutely minimal interface, you could even do without that interface. Current ATC addons have sometimes HUGE panels you need to keep on screen. Immersion killing. Yes, it really is a shame ProATC won't come to MSFS (at least not anytime soon but I personally think it will never come). For now I'll do with default ATC (every now and then).

That is exactly my point of view with ATC addons, @tup61 !

The only thing with Pro Atc is that you have to push numbers on the keyboard, Pilot2Atc and VoxAtc have voice recognition.

It is great to talk instead of pressing a number on the keyboard.

Also Pilot2Atc only needs a flight plan and you can add Atc chatter to it to make it more fun.

Yes actually you just need to launch FSUIPC for FS2020 and it runs ok.

Hi all

I haven't find out if Pilot2ATC :
- Can assign SID/STARS and runway based on weather?
- Has a textinterface instead of speaking?

In my 16 + years of using an ATC program in flight sim how well it vectors you for a descent and approach is the most critical. That is the most difficult aspect since it’s constantly assessing your position, speed, altitude and descent rate relative to your landing runway.

Starting you down at the ideal position is also important so you don’t need to do that last minute dive with spoilers engaged or alternatively started down too early and wasting fuel being too low too far out.

With all respect to voice quality and clarity of enunciation it’s how your aircraft is handled in the latter stages of a flight that sorts the great from the average.

Which leaves the big question... which ATC program are you using then!

Given this is the MSFS forum that’s a dangerous question. 😉 I specifically wrote my post to be flight sim neutral. I’m using Radar Contact v4 for FSX / P3D.

It requires a compatible version of MakeRunways, Simconnect and FSUIPC. I don’t know if MakeRunways can be made for MSFS. One of the main reasons I haven’t jumped ship.

Whilst not perfect it ticks most of the important boxes including the one I mentioned earlier. Many here will have used it in a former life.

I miss RC4 so much. I was hoping, with the extreme popularity and size of MSFS, some FBW type group would pop up with a profoundly new and revolutionary ATC program all their own; one that would be a mirror image to the real world.

I guess I'll just continue to imagine ATC clearances when I fly, for now.

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

It’s the hardest type of program to write. The trigonometry skills required are mind-boggling. We had a specialist for RC4 who helped out John Dekker. That’s why there are so few and hats off to the authors of those currently in use.

There’s nothing stopping you using both sims. 😉

Didn't the main dev of RC4 left 10 years ago, is someone continuing the development today?

  • yes, it can, does this by default (this can be disabled by the pilot prior to flight, you can force choose your own)

- Has a textinterface instead of speaking?

  • yes, it can, I use this exclusively (vs. voice command, which is nice for some)

He did and sadly no, but it remains useable.
