If they had mass then the Higgs Field would prevent them from travelling at light speed. Having said that, there are convulated ways of thinking about it that might conjur up a "yes maybe" answer. Invariant mass is the modern definition in which case, no. But some like to claim yes because of relativistic mass. If I recall correctly. No... would be the sensible answer. The old term of relativistic mass confuses them. I'm sure someone with greater knowledge than me can clarify. Edited November 29, 20214 yr by martin-w
November 29, 20214 yr There's' a pretty good, simple explanation of photon mass, or lack thereof, here Martin. I'm not sure it answers all the myriad of questions posed but at least it's understandable - sort of🙂https://www.desy.de/user/projects/Physics/ParticleAndNuclear/photon_mass.html . I don't remember much about this stuff from learning a little about physics way-back-when but I sure find it fascinating. November 29, 20214 yr Thanks Doug, I'll book mark it. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
December 20, 20214 yr Author This is a much better explanation, with practical demonstration, of Veritasium's somewhat inaccurate video. Edited December 20, 20214 yr by martin-w
