Newbie Question about ATC

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Can someone explain to me at a high level how ATC works functionally? By that I don't want a tutorial on ATC. I want to know the mechanics of it. Do you wear a headset with a microphone, connected to the PC, and talk to the ATC in the sim?

Thanks,

Rob

How about a shortened version?

The in-game ATC is like what was done in FSX or FS2004, if you ever used those Sims,  When ATC contacts you, a popup screen appears and you click on your choice of response.  Your pilot's voice is then heard responding back to ATC.

There are 3rd party ATC versions, like VATSIM, where you use a headset and mike talking directly to a live ATC person through your computer using SKYPE or similar method.

Awaiting the new Microsoft Flight Sim and the purchase of a new system.  Running a Chromebook for now!

Look for the Tower symbol in the in flight menu displayed when you mouse over the top centre of your screen. That'll be the ATC dialogue box.

All keystrokes basically, no voice integration.

This is possible with Multi Crew Experience, you can interact with ATC, your Co-pilot, ground crew and cabin crew.

The only draw back at this time is that your MSFS co-pilot will repeat what you just said to ATC, other than that (!) it works flawlessly. This is due to the present impossibility to "shut down" the MSFS co-pilot (which was not a problem with previous sims).

Here is a link to their AVSIM forum if you want to learn more.
