I knew where Montgomery Street was Doug.  Never heard of New Montgomery Street.

When you've been away from your home town for a decade or more it gets (WNA) off and changes things to confuse you if you ever go back.  I know where Pine Street is too.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/140_New_Montgomery  . I worked there back in 1966. I'd just married and my wife was in her final year of nurse's training at St. Luke's Hospital. We lived in a dumpy little apartment in the Mission District. Every morning I'd grab a gitney and make my way "downtown". Those were great days. Or, maybe I was just young and didn't know any better  🙂  .....Doug

The less you know the happier you are Doug.  Who can be happy thinking about muons all the time?

So New Montgomery Street is  the extension of Montgomery Street south of Market Street?

That's right Noel. New Montgomery runs from Market down to Howard. 140 is between Mission and Howard.  https://140nm.com/  . I haven't been there in over 55 years. But I remember it as a great place to work.........Doug

I remember south of Market was where all the pawn shops were and where the derelicts hung out.

Charlie - Good Lord. Rack-mounted vacuum tube thingies. My first job with the telephone company involved rack-mounted stuff. I was a summer intern with Pacific Telephone (remember them?). My "office" (a small cubicle) was at 140 New Montgomery Street. My job was to develop a routine maintenance plan for something called N1 Carrier. That's one of those things used to transmit telephone calls. The N1 units were vacuum tube, rack-mounted, and the highest one was about 30' above the floor. Fortunately they only weighed about 20 pounds. Climbing those ladders scared me to death. The central office where I developed the plan was up on Pine Street. Maybe you know where that is. I wonder if it's still being used?.....Doug

Now yer talkin' my territory!  Being an ex Lanier tech, Pac Bell was one of my major accounts!  Back in the mid 80's I took many a service calls at 140 New Montgomery, 666 Folsom (devil building) and 550 Pine Street (Pine Street Frames).  Also the newer building at 202 2nd Street.  I loved going to Pac Bell because nobody actually did any work there!  They only partied and ate.  The Filipino ladies would bring in home-made lumpia and adobo.  I probably gained 20 lbs!

Boy! You've got that right. Sometime in 1972-73 Pacific Telephone joined into the "save south of Market" movement. There was a building down there at 161 Berry St. which was to become my new "home". A former banana warehouse, we converted it to office space and moved in. The only good thing about that move was that my office had a small balcony right on the China Basin. There was a large parking lot in front of the building and I usually drove to work from my home in San Ramon. But occasionally I'd drive into San Leandro and take BART. On the BART days I'd walk down to the office from Market using Third St. And I'd have to step over the drunks passed out on the sidewalk. Just a block away from my office there was a liquor store that sold some kind of cheap white wine by the half pint. Where else in the whole world can you buy a half pint of wine? For 50 cents? After I left they built the Moscone convention center and the ballpark and the 'hood took on a whole new look. Much of Berry St. now is very expensive condos filled with Facebook and Google types. They have no idea what they missed.........Doug
