GPS 2020 in the C208B

Hey Folks,

Had a request on how to successfully add the GPS 2020 to replace the default Carenado GPS unit in the C208B (Steam Gauges).

First thing to do is to download the GPS 2020 unit, and the link below is to the current v12.4 in the AVSIM library.

Once downloaded open the zip archive and copy the GPS2020.cab into the P3D Gauges folder, that way it's going to be available for any aircraft.

Next, and since the Panel.cfg will need editing, get youself a nice Text Editor like Notepad++, a Google search will help in finding.

Now navigate to the C208B's Panel.cfg (\SimObjects\Airplanes\Carenado C208B Grand Caravan\panel\Panel.cfg) and make a copy backup, just in case editing gets out of hand you've a backup without needing to re-install the aircraft.

I generally call my backups along the lines of Panel.cfg.orig but you can call it whatever you'd prefer.

Open the Panel.cfg in fav text editor.

The first entry should be...

Rest of [Window Titles] entries

 

The next line set would be...

The basics are we are removing all the original entries for [Window00] and using ones defined for the GPS 2020 (the above entries).

You could either comment the origional [Window00] entries using 2 forward slashes for each line, or just replace the section (since you've a backup anyway).

Following on...

We arrive at [Vcockpit03] where we replace the original gauge05= entry with our GPS 2020 entry.

Down to [Vcockpit04] where we comment out the Drag entry as shown below.

This doesn't have anything to do with the GPS but it does stop being thrown through the windshield when the throttle is dropped back.

 

Once the edits are completed save the Panel.cfg, and that's it, all having gone well you'll have a GPS 2020 unit installed.

Now the GPS 2020 when it pops open (shift+1) is a pretty squarish type of unit, however the good thing about the unit is it's map display won't squish out of shape when it's in the dash, it just shows a bit less.

Given the size I typically pop it up to use it directly and monitor via the dash.

For those who are observant you'll have seen the extra gauge17= in [Vcockpit03]

This is a little control gauge I've coded myself to flip the 3D knobs on/off by tying the gauge to an unused switch in the LHS VC panel.

I'll look at writing up something to cover configuring the 3DKnob/switch control on the weekend.
