55 inches vs 65 inches ( 4k )

Recommended Posts

When I was a kid it seems to me a 65" screen was what we called a drive-in movie!  😉

For a little perspective:

The width of a 65" monitor is about 57".

The width of a 75" monitor is about 65".

The width of a Learjet 45 cabin is 61".

I measured the actual size on my 55" screen of the PMDG B737NGXu PFD/MFD and it worked out to ~85% of life-size.  I still remember my jaw dropping the first time I put it up on the big screen.

Big-format displays are pretty hard to beat.

And from the left seat what of that 61" is the in the static, eyes straight forward, field of vision at any one instant for a pilot with normal eyesight and normal peripheral vision?

Well, I don't know, but I assume those pilots are using TrackIR in their real world cockpits!!  😁🤣😉

Probably I'll go with the 65 inches 4k

Hopefully, I won't regret it next year in October, when the RTX 4090 comes out

I switched to using ChasePlane and a XBOX controller attached to my Yoko Yoke so that I can easily thumb my view while hands on Yoke.  Ultimately I'd prefer a 220-240 degree curved field of view.

This!  I commend the VR enthusiast but there are issues with working a cockpit in the headset I am not sure will get solved.  A 220-240 field of view with some home cockpit items sounds like the dream to me.  I now there are projector solutions out there but I am holding out for a foldable OLED with "4k" resolution surround.  Graphics power for 30 or 60 FPS might be a few years (decade?) off.

Curious how you attached the Xbox controller.  Sounds like a good idea.  I have a space mouse off to the side and it works decent for me, but only when sitting back and taking in views.  Not so good when fake piloting with the yoke.

I've been searching for different 65 inches modeIs,and I found this one, but it's for " outdoor "
It has a great nativ contrast ratio, brightness, etc ( the price is .....high )
Do you think, it would be okay as a pc monitor?
Gaming, mostly.

Hello all and Happy Holidays.

I switched over from an ultrawide to the LGC1 48 OLED... I can never go back. This TV is fantastic. I have a 3080ti and 5950x so you will need the hardware to push it.

Cheers...!

Thank you for your reply

I have the RTX 3090

To be honest, I'd like to get an OLED but I always avoided it because of the burn in issue

Did anyone here upgraded from 55 inches to 65 inches, both 4k?

I'd really like to have a larger display, right now I have a Samsung 55 inches, 4k. It's not bad at all but the bigger, the better.

55 inches 4k = 80 ppi

65 inches 4k = 67 ppi

Is there a huge difference between the two? I mean the image quality ( larger pixels on the 65 inches )

I don't really care about websites, fonts, etc

Any advices are welcome, thank you

Bigger is not always better as you say. If you go bigger and your viewing distance and resolution remains the same, then simply by the laws of optics, you will have a poorer quality picture from a resolution point of view. How much poorer would be determined by the distance you sit from the screen. The closer you are, the more likely it is that you can notice the change in resolution, so it may be that at 40" you may or may not be able to see too much difference, only you would be able to make that decision. I suspect there would be a reaosnably marked difference TBH. Also, your verttical viewing height will increase, so the centre of the picture will be higher, and as Rob rightly pointed out, this could affect neck strain. You also need to consider things like the bottom of the screen will be lower and whether that would disappear behind any instruments you may have in your sim or on your desk. I would highly recommend that you get to 'test drive' the larger screen and see if it fits with your expectations, because as I say, bigger isn't always better.

No, easily done with a modern day VR headset

I hope that the OP has already experienced VR ? If not, I would certainly recommend trying that out before choosing to upgrade to bigger 2D screen

I didn't want VR because of the poor image quality, tbh.

I'm pretty sure, the VR immersion vs 3D displays can't even compare

What VR headsets have you tried? What are their resolutions and refresh freqs necessary?

If you experienced VR with a recent headset and you still find the image quality poor then i won't argue.

On the other hand, if you have never experienced VR and have just read negative reviews on it, then by all means do yourself a favor and try it out before going further as it just might change your whole perspective. Happened to me after 25 yrs of simming.

I do not understand what you mean by '3D' displays. you mean like 3D television (stereoscopic) ?

I am only used to the old Oculus Rift CV1 which is nowadays considered as a low res, blurry experience compared to current headsets, so i have heard.

At the moment there is no newer headset possible for me ...My old PC and Gfx card couldn't handle that.

I read a lot about not being able to read the instruments. I never understood that. I have no issues with it.
