Old Comic Strips...

Recommended Posts

While were having coffee this morning my wife asked me if I remembered the old Orphan Annie comic strip.  Wow!  Did I ever and I couldn't stop the flood of other old comic strips that flooded my mind.  How many of you remember these comic strips/radio shows?

Tillie the Toiler

Ozark Ike

Joe Palooka

The Gumps

Gasoline Alley

Smiling Jack

Steve Canyon

Terry and the pirates

Sky King

Archie

Captain Midnight

Dick Tracy

Blondie and Dagwood

The Captain and the Kids

Lil' Abner

I'll bet there are a dozen more I can't think of off the top of my head.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

I've decided to use my power of numeric dyslexia to declare that I'll turn 37 on the twenty-first of January this year!

I am also 23 but on the way down into my second childhood. So, next year I'll turn 22. Or maybe 21. I think you go down faster than you go up.

In the UK, I remember Nancy cartoons inside the bubblegum wrappers. In those days after WW2, visiting Americans brought bubblegum to the poor, disadvantaged Brits, thinking that was the most important thing missing in their diets, I suppose.

We had Dennis the Menace but he was not the same one as in the USA; he was more of a deliberate menace.

From a regional perspective, in Scotland, we had Oor Wullie and The Broons.

I remember Desperate Dan, a cowboy who was always eating cow pie which was about 6ft in diameter and with a pair of horns sticking out the top.

Fritzi Ritz whose comic was inexplicably taken over by her niece, Nancy. Li'l Abner was surreal and spawned the custom of "Sadie Hawkins Day," where girls were encouraged to ask boys out. There was the character Fearless Fosdick who was always shot, leaving neat little holes in him, which were always "merely a flesh wound." Li'l Abner rivals the MCU in number of characters and plot lines.
