Runways X Y and Z

Going into Belize last night, I see the appraoch runways X Y and Z. I understand they designate different appraoch types. But then what types are X Y and Z and which to select when ?

Good stuff. But how does one know which one to choose ? Would they have to download the approach plates ? It says what you choose is dependent on your specific plane intrumentation.
