Overexposed skies when looking down in cockpit

Recommended Posts

EyeAdaptation is a wacky setting for FS2020 it appears.

Some personal observations. Seeing how folks are noting that it now helps, I decided to try it again (I toggled it many moons ago and it didn't seem to do anything).

I set EyeAdaptation to 0 and fired up a flight in the 737-700 and, indeed, the situation was much better. I could actually see the runway even though the sun was out. Much better, all was well.

A few hours later, I fired up FS2020 with a new flight, but this time with the 737-700 freighter. I immediately noticed everything blown out again out the window and thought that maybe I was deluding myself earlier. However, when I brought up the config again and it had reverted EyeAdaptation back to 1. The last update timestamp was about the time I loaded the plane. 😞

It gets better though... Today I decided to change it back to 0 again so I brought up the file and, lo and behold, EyeAdaptation was back to 0 again on its own. The update timestamp was when I shut FS2020 down after the flight last night. Why did FS2020 decide to turn EyeAdaptation on for that plane and then turn it back off again? I have no idea.

So, just keep it in mind if you change this and doesn't seem to do anything, it could be that FS2020 has decided to change it back for whatever reason. This wasn't even after an update or anything. You need to keep an eye on it as it doesn't seem to stick.

I changed my config file to read only and that helps.

It does, but any settings you change ingame are not persistent anymore, just for the current session. That's the downside.

There are no other settings there making the visuals different for me, I would likely change on a normal basis.  If there were, it is easy enough to change.

Yup, MSFS likes to revert settings in that config file for no reason. It does the same with color grading.  Changing it to read-only does fix this. Just remember you've done it if you want to make any permanent changes to graphics settings!

I have had eyeadaptation in cfg  turned off for months

Turning eyeadaptation in cfg to On is far better. As i have found out the last few day it reacts faster, turning it of is a big mistake as your not and it makes it slower to react.

Perhaps these things depend on monitors, because my experience is very different to this, David.

It used to be that eye_adaption in the CFG set to '0' or '1' made no difference whatsoever.

And then, having read in this thread that it seems to have started working since one of the last updates, I set it to '0' again yesterday and there was a significant reduction in the effect.

I'm personally not seeing any difference in speed of the effect.   Just that set to '1' I get awful contrast glare when moving my head (TrackIR) between looking at the panel, and looking out of the glareshield.     With it set to '0' the same effect is still there (with the same depiction speed) but the effect is reduced by about 80%.

Works very well for me 👍

How do you look down in the cockpit and up to the sky at the same time, anyway?  Just curious.

Your real life eyes, as should be the intent from the devs.

The MSFS camera should ideally simulate the direction your head is facing. When you decide to glance at your instruments then back at the runway, your "head" should be positioned so as to make this possible without moving your in game neck / tilting your in game camera.

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

OK, I was looking at it from a vr perspective where the center point is also what is most in focus.

I now see much less difference when looking down in the cockpit after I did this:

Nvidia Control Panel | Desktop Color Settings. I changed the gamma setting.

This will reduce or increase the effect of looking down, but it will also make other images and internet pages on the desktop look different. So you have to move the gamma slider so that you like what you see in MSFS but at the same time not mess up the other desktop images too much.

Gamma changes are: Changing the brightness of midtones without affecting the shadows and highlights.

25 year old games had in game gamma correction together with contrast control that only affected the game, Ive yet to read an explanation of why these basic adjustments are not implemented

Someone pointed out on another forum that in order to make the eye-adaptation setting of zero give the desired effect, they also had to set color grading to zero. I've had color grading turned off for a long time so it didn't occur to me that the two might be related... but worth a try for anyone seeing no difference when trying to turn eye_adaptation off.
