Yes. I'm sure you're right. But my brain has perhaps blocked out memories of past updates due to Post Traumatic Sim Update Disorder.

Today’s update went smoothly for me.....but the whole process is still as mad as a box of frogs.

I also found it difficult to update it, the microsoft store page wouldn't update it until I'd started up the x-box app, closed it down,signed out of the store, re-booted, signed back in, held my legs up in the air, waggled them about 😀, then .....no....went out, to do some chores, came back home, had another try with the mangy store, and yes something updated there, with a window showing for a moment, and then msfs started up - and then the update window appeared and there were some files to update there that were in the gigabytes range - but were'nt the world update iberia thingy.....had to move through the maze of windows to find that download, and yes - even more measly-minor-modicum updates of the other world updates to find!!😬

What a palaver,  MSFS needs its own dedicated update program outside of the marketplace that lists all the different updates available at that point in time - so you can just access them from one interface.

David Mills post is right, its too much of a complex chore. 😨

Did I just say that?  Well....the update itself seemed to go smoothly.  I always restart my pc after an update to make sure everything's...just so...Then I fired up my game, loaded a flight that would take me into Gibraltar in my Kodiak and....the game crashed whilst loading. 

Okay, restart game and find I have no add-on aircraft listed in my hanger anymore!

I am fairly new to MSFS but this is the 2nd time MSFS has directed me to the MS Store yet there is no updates showing.  I can see MSFS under the library button but again no options to update just to play which then results in the sim telling me to update and directing me to MS Store!

The only way I see an update is to manually open up the X-Box app which then tells me there is an update for the app.  I dont know why it is not all seamless through the sim when it checks itself for updates rather than relying on two other apps (MS Store and X-Box).

When you go to the MS Store which you should do first, on the lower left of your screen right above "help" you will see your library ( looks like some books) click on that, and it will  take you to the update page. Upper  right hand corner, click on "get updates" and the X box app, and the Store and the Flight sim will all get updated. After that, start MSFS, and it will lead you the  rest of the way through the update.

Thanks, I will try to remember that next month as I've got the update simply through the X-Box app.  I did see under my library that I owned MS Flight Simulator 2020 Standard but there was no obvious clue to update.  I certainly would not have considered clicking a Help button.

In my mind there are 4 parts to every update:

1) Windows updates.
2) MS Store updates
3) XBOX Gaming App Updates and finally
4) MSFS updates

The first 3 are to ensure that the 4th goes well.

When you clicked on the library books, and it took you to the update page, did you see on the top right the button that says "get updates".

Mine never says that in MS store. I always go to library and there’s nothing to do there. Xbox app handles all the updates for me now, for the last several updates, and then “the dance” as the OP mentioned. Today I guess everyone needs an Xbox update too.

When you go to Ms Store and Library and Updates, Xbox is one of the apps on the list of pending updates . One click and you are done. Not necessary to hop around.

It didnt take me to an update page, it took me to a page containing loads of apps, 3 of which were different versions of MSFS.  I could see no mention of any updates, even clicking on the version of MSFS I owned revealed no update options just Play Now which then caused a loop as it started the sim, which then said it needs a mandatory update then took me back to the MS Store rather than the XBox app - which did show updates.  I now have MSFS full updated but I just checked MS Store and it only now weirdly says updates are available which it didnt earlier.

 As usual with the Steam version this update was easy and simple like they all have been. Painless.

On that Library page on the top right corner did you not see a blue button that said "Get updates".
