He has an 8th gen 8700K.  6 core 12 thread

If he can still get one the i9 9900K (8 core 16 thread) it should work in his motherboard and give a bit of a boost, may need a better HSF though.

AS for the 3080TI, it is actually a 3090 with less RAM, it is based on the 3090 die not the 3080 one.

My post was in reply to the one right before mine that said, "Currently I have an i7-9700k paired with a 1070. I think the 1070 is currently the bottle neck. If I would go the same route with a 3080Ti, would then the CPU become a bottle neck.". I should have quoted that post to make it clearer.

Happily, EVGA has recently released a 12 GB model of the RTX 3080, which Amazon and Microcenter are both selling for “only” $999 USD. The RTX 3080 Ti tends to sell for about $300 more than this. I purchased the RTX 3080, and it pairs quite nicely with the Ryzen 5800X in my recent build. Great to see a good card selling at an almost affordable price!

if only I could afford a 3090 lol

Would add exactly nothing over your 3080Ti, except it weighs twice as much and cost 1.5x as much.

@Ray Proudfoot I think you will be very happy with a 3080Ti. I have been running a 3080Ti after upgrading from a 2080 and I run MSFS and P3D 5.3 on an ultra wide curved display at 5120x1440. Huge difference. And, at that resolution, both sims are very smooth with most graphic options up very high. Now, I also have a higher end cpu, so there is that. But, I think a 3080Ti would help out in exactly the manner in which you are thinking. My 3080Ti is an EVGA card, and it roughly the same size as my 2080. It takes two 8x2 plugs from the PSU.

Something else to consider is that had you decided to wait for the RTX 4000 series, most of the information available right now looks like they will be drawing huge amounts of power, around 600w at the 4090 level. With that much juice comes a lot of heat too, so now you are looking at potentially upgrading your cooling solution(s). I say if you are happy getting a 3080Ti now, then get it, while they are available. And in these days, whose to say when the 4000 series are released we will be able to even get them for a while. Just more food for thought 🙂

Thanks for that. I’m not the type of person who rushes into big decisions. If I did buy the 3080Ti it would be going into a 3.5 year-old system with an eighth gen i7 processor. I could then end up with an imbalanced system.

One option is to sell my PC (spec in signature) and buy a new Chillblast with the latest CPU and memory. I could get a decent price I’m sure.

I have a mate who is looking for a new Chillblast PC for photo editing and mine would give him far more than a new one. He’s in no hurry and neither am I. Food for thought.

Are there any details out yet for the 4000 cards?

I believe you are correct, Ray, to consider a new system before investing in either the RTX 3000 or a new 4000 series video card. Your existing rig will not support PCIe 4.0, so the new video card would be hampered a bit from the get go. There’s much speculation about how much the 4000 cards will improve performance, but there’s an equal amount of apprehension as to whether those cards will be available soon at a price point that you or I would find attractive.

Sorry I know we are drifting towards hardware topic but rumor has it that possible RTX 4090ti may consume up to 900w! Insane! 2x16 pin connectors! What a toaster!

OK makes sense.

Well the guy with the 9700K can just slot in a 9900K if he can find one, giving a smidgeon more clock speed as well as 8 cores and 8 threads instead of just 8 cores - though not sure how much benefit the hyperthreading will be in MSFS.

How much more will probably depend on the supply issues, but I figure the 4000 series will likely be in roughly the same price buckets we're seeing today.   Top end cards for top end $$$, middle tier cards for middle-tier money, etc.

The only problem is the waiting.

I too have been tempted to spring for a 3080ti but my 1080ti is still doing ok, and it's perfectly matched with my clocked 8700K machine.  I'd just be cpu bound if I made a move.

I'm glad I made the move definitely getting better performance at 4k and manage any stuttering by using vsync locked at 30 fps, other games also benefit greatly

A 3080ti will bottleneck the cpu. A 2080 super would be a good match for a 9700k.

If you're worried about the GPU not being fully used without upgrading the CPU, you could always bump up the render scaling to push the GPU harder.

I waited to buy MSFS until I could upgrade from my 1060 to a 3070Ti,  I am glad that I waited...

Now...the processor...LOL

So if I were to upgrade my system from a 1080ti to a 3080 with a 9700K, am I not going to notice a huge difference because I will then be CPU limited?

I went that route with an i7 8700k and I felt it was worth it with a 3080 ti, the benefits are across all uses not just the flight sim, I can now push rendering to 100 and bump up plenty of other still and still see a good fps increase

Amazon has the EVGA 3080 12gb with 1800 boost clock for $999 currently available with free shipping.

https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-12G-P5-4877-KL-Technology-Backplate/dp/B09Q3DH7V3/ref=sr_1_1?crid=V33O6IEUAY9L&keywords=evga+12gb+3080&sprefix=evga+12gb+3080%2Caps%2C107&sr=8-1

This is a beast of a card performance wise only slightly less than a ti for a very good price.
