MSFS Amazing performance boost

Recommended Posts

Saw this video on overkill's YouTube channel, basically advocating installing a stripped down version of the Nvidia drivers, leaving out anything unnecessary for MSFS, to boost performance.

His take on it is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7-tRpa4B_U&t=455s

He came across it on 2020 fs'ers  YouTube channel, the instructions on how to do it are here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D74K-4Bz-kw&t=0s

People in the YouTube comments seem pretty favourable about it - but I'm a tad sceptical that it's only just come to light, people have been tweaking FPS since the early days of FSX?

Reckon it's worth a punt?

Here we go again 😁

It barely makes any difference. But give it a go if you like. You've nothing to lose.

I watched the entire video and felt like I was watching something out of 2005.  I've not done anything beyond using NV's clean install option for ages now, I have FIVE Nvidia Containers in TM showing this very moment, and I have less than zero performance problems in MSFS or anything else.  I installed, uninstalled GeForce Experience a few times as well--none of these issues create any performance problems and never have.  Heck I am using a NV driver from a year ago now when I installed this 3080 Ti--works great!   These maneuvers might help people who are constantly tweaking everything and ultimately making things far more complex than they should need to be in 2022.  KISS is the method to follow.  I'm always one of the ones with zero problems with MSFS or any other application.  I would venture to say anyone who takes the time and effort to create this video spends a lot of time 'tweaking', and likely screwed up something that necessitated this ritual to undo the damage done w/ previous episodes of 'tweaking'.

I think this is nothing but a snake oil ad in 2022 to get YouTube hits. You’d probably get a bigger performance change from clearing the shader cache than performing this unnecessary exercise.

I just looked at my task manager now, and the CPU usage by Nvdia that he is referring to, is zero. Just a few Mbs of memory. Seems like this "fix" is just some snake oil.

I believe Overkill is genuinely trying to help out, but I am always wary of his videos due to some of the claims he has made in the past.

Call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind, but I prefer Rob.

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

I have always use GEForce experience and express driver instalation. Often I see advice to use these tools in safe mode to make sure the old drivers are removed totally - is this not needed nowadays!

Must admit I watched and followed the two videos referenced by Overkill.  Using MSFS developer to watch cpu/gpu usage, I normally see about 20-30ms for the cpu.  After following these two videos I am now seeing 12ms. I set my graphics settings to match his, so everything on ultra. My gpu is normally running at approx 25-28ms but after following the videos it now runs at 19-20ms.

My monitor is 2k at 144mhz. I have v-sync on in msfs set at 20, so I'm getting a steady 48fps.  This is the first time in two years since buying the PC I have done the clean graphics driver uninstall/re-install in safe mode.

I have certainly increased fps following the advice so I'm happy, but maybe I just had MSFS misconfigured or over-tweaked and it needed a clear out.

For avoiding GFE, isn't it much easier running the DDU tool and then installing the video driver in clean install/custom mode and not clicking GeforceExpress?

So we have a shader cache folder in MSFS ?

Last month I installed GeForce Experience because I wanted to use the Overlay Gaming Filters to make the scene look even more real.

Did not see a difference in framerate at that moment.

I regularly burn incense before I start a session with MSFS. Amazing improvement! So smooth!

Which filter did you end up using?
