Just wondering if there is any firm news with regard to a release date for x-plane 12?

They hope to have the early access beta ready for July in time for the show at Oshkosh.

So that puts the official release a few months later.

Finally some "first footage" of their new DSFs, philip did mention they overhauled their autogen algos, although the quality of the video is bad but scenery is looking way richer + plausible. Accuracy of it remains to be seen & compared to reality once one has a copy.

The "bad" news is it seems they are only adding more autogen and not overhauling existing as well, lota of the art assets appear to stay the same. For me it's not a problem but i'm hoping SFD global will work as it should, with the new autogen algos that look much more plausible and rich it should only improve.

Almost certainly the best scenery format of any graphics engine, highly efficient at storing complex scenery data and very quick for a computer to read and render.

Got it. A sort of box of standard parts for builders to create scenery. I hope the box will include hedges.

for a while

https://developer.x-plane.com/article/forest-for-file-format-specification/

main update to 12 was to generate individual vegetation with shaders rather than 2 simple quads.

A lot more they can do with that than has been shown already, but I would expect more there than has been shown already to come later in the xp12 run.

Ancient XP scenery system from the old days around 2005 or so (XP6?) when XP had really weird aircraft.

Bob is right. DSF's are the files which contain the scenery of X-Plane - from XP 8 until now (but extended with lots of new features since its introduction). Earlier versions had ENV files for scenery.

You know what I like about that XP12 scenery shot there? There is zero popping or morphing of the scenery, and it looks smooth!
