PMDG 737 pricing

As PMDG is a USA based company, I am (almost) sure no VAT is due .

I hope not, will wait and see. For the MilViz C310 I had to pay VAT while they are a US company.

I though that Milviz was Canadian.

.I understand that the dev work have to be paid, but I don't like the PMDG strategy to make cash for old products, nothing new under the sun. It's just my opinion.

They can't possibly do work on older products forever for free.  It is simply not doable. They need to generate revenue to pay the rent and keep the building open and keep their developers employed and on staff so that they can continue forward. If they don't have revenue, they have no business and we have no airplanes. There's really no other way. If we want airplanes in our simulator, then we need to pay them sufficiently for them to be able to keep the developers doors open and the shop running. And the particular location where pmdg is located is not known for being one of the lower cost places in the world to do business. Maybe we can talk them into moving to Tennessee or something and we can get lower prices?

These aircraft were all built in the 2010's. I don't know what people want pmdg to add beyond what was on the aircraft Boeing sold to the airlines.

I stand corrected, they are indeed.

Exactly! They are very similar. This means a lot of the development effort will have benefit all four variants. Why do customers have to pay the full price all over again for the additional variants?

Indeed. I'd actually say this pricing structure actively discourages customers from buying more than one variant, as the marginal value you get actually decreases with each additional purchase you make. I'm not a marketing expert, but generally sellers try to structure it so it's the other way around!

Assuming (and I'm being generous to PMDG here) that about 80% of the code, art, and sounds are shared between the models, anyone who buys more than one variant is putting about 80% of the price of each of their subsequent purchases toward paying PMDG for the same thing, all over again

Then again, "convince customers to pay you multiple times for the same thing" is as good a description as any for PMDG's overall business model in the last 5-10 years. 🙂

I would think not but I guess we'll see ;).

But does it matter? The idea of not requiring a base package is that people can just buy the variant they want, so... it makes sense that everyone should pay a minimal amount for whichever variant of this long-term project that they want, right?

That fits my situation. The only 737 I am interested in is the 700, so I am delighted that it is coming out first, but even if it wasn’t, the fact it is a stand-alone package is a very positive thing. In P3D, I had to buy the whole 737 product line (800/900 first then 700/600 expansion) just to get the one and only variant I wanted.

When I bought the DC6 last year, I just paid the indicated price without any VAT. I live in Germany and used my normal home address to complete the payment, so I didn't try to cheat the system by pretending to be based in the US.

Milviz charged me the German VAT on top of the price when I bought the Porter.

Interested in why you prefer the 700, as the 'buzz' has been about the 800. [I'm not wedded to any particular 737]

Is it an airline you like flying in the Sim runs 700's , or something else?

Same here. It seems MilViz is Canadian and that makes the difference.

Its more expensive that the NGXu.

Only if you absolutely must have every variant. Which is kind of like saying a Hyundai Elantra costs $72,000 because that's how much you'd pay if you bought all three trim levels.

It's a fairly intelligent pricing strategy because it lets people who don't insist on having every single variant get off at a lower price point than we've paid before, while allowing "whales" to help support further development with a much larger spend.

Honestly, its not the amount that really bothers me. Its RSRs BS that bothers me. All this talk of this low price and he comes out with this stuff. Its more of how he has been communicating lately.

I had the same thought.  If RSR hadn’t gone on about how we would be pleasantly surprised by the price I don’t think many would be surprised by the $70 price tag…between that and his comments about how many sales they made off the DC-6 I really thought they were going lower on price.

Part of their value calculation seems to be that the -700 includes all the other -700 based variants (cargo, BBJ etc) which frankly I would guess are of less interest to a lot of simmers than just the base -700…that’s speculation on my part though.

In the end it is what it is, and we can all vote with our wallets.  The price is around what I expected before RSR’s “pleasantly surprised comments” so I’ll buy a few variants, though I still think the -600 is far too steep for many to be interested.

More expensive because with p3d the basepackage had 800 and 900, now each aircraft have is own price, and 800+900 msfs will cost more.

I wonder if I would be the only flight simmer in the entire world to consider purchasing only the -600 variant...

I was thinking this if people think that all the variations are much of a muchness and they fly the same from the cockpit, then why not wait to get the cheapest one?

Well, I was hoping to get the 700/800 and possibly the 900, but looks like I’ll just get the 700 and spend the extra money for a different plane. Bummer. If there were some kind of discount for already owning the 700, I’d certainly consider grabbing others.
