Top Gun Maverick is actually... Good?

Recommended Posts

Not sure when the last time was that I saw universally glowing reviews like this. Definitely not what I was expecting.

Hopefully the corresponding DLC for MSFS, which releases on the same day as the movie, will also be good. It's odd that we know next to nothing about it, even though it was originally developed and scheduled for release almost a year ago (July of 2021). Perhaps there's a surprise or two in store..

See it on the biggest screen possible. Then see it again.

This is a worthy, often exemplary follow-up to the 1986 classic. It’s everything a summer movie should be.

Somehow, "Maverick" manages to recycle those latter beats -- with an exceptionally well cast class of new pilots -- and still feel contemporary, all while approximating the old-fashioned virtues of the kind of movies that flourished in the '80s .

A breathless, gravity and logic-defying sequel.

A textbook example of how to make a sequel.

THE summer blockbuster: feel-good, action-packed, funny, romantic, exciting, non-superhero theater draw that we've all been waiting for. It's perfect for the whole family, and couples of all ages. Welcome back to the movies.

With music by Lady Gaga and Hans Zimmer, action scenes tailor-made for hulking IMAX screens, and Cruise flaunting it in a white naval uniform, it’s Top Gun dialled up to Mach 10.

The saying: "sequels aren't good..." should include the disclaimer: "unless it's with Tom Cruise." [Full review in Spanish]

The best legacy sequel to a single movie. One still can debate Creed, Cobra Kai or The Force Awakens, but each had entire franchises upon which to draw.

Maverick is not the type of movie you wait around for until it’s on cable: It’s an adrenaline-pumping event worth getting off the La-Z-Boy to experience.

Reviews are starting to come in. I predict some Oscars !

https://deadline.com/video/top-gun-maverick-review-tom-cruise-sequel/

"Cruise and the producers of Top Gun: Maverick waited too long to do a sequel? After all, it has been 36 years since Top Gun hit screens in 1986. Well, wonder no more. Not only is the timing right and execution of this long-gestating follow-up splendid, but it also actually tops the original in every way imaginable, from an all-knowing performance for the ages from Cruise to its highly emotional storyline,"

Strange how movies that the critics love are often panned by the unwashed masses of movie goers.

I bought my tickets to the IMAX version for June 4th, so I’m excited to see it. Tried to get tickets for the release weekend but didn’t get in soon enough before all the good seats were sold out.

I rarely go to the movies anymore just because I don’t have much interest 99% of the latest releases and some of the ones I wouldn’t mind seeing, I don’t mind waiting for release to Amazon.

I think the last movie I went to see was the final Danial Craig 007 movie, No Time To Die. Unfortunately I didn’t like it nearly as much as Casino Royal, Quantum of Solace, Sky Fall or Spectre. I left the theater wishing I hadn’t spent $50 on two IMAX tickets. 😂😂

Its a good action movie with great flying sequences and occasional CGI. I didnt think it was anything exceptional but still a lot of fun!

I feel a lot of the buzzing reviews are riding the nostalgia wave for millions of people around the world who rented the first one on VHS all those years ago.

I found this on my twitter timeline, found it funny

People complain of poor cinematographic adaptations of video games but TG  : M is very faithful to the DCS World. The scenario is absolutely  stupid, the mission doesn’t make sense, enemies are scattered at random but the aircraft cockpits are very faithful to reality.

I did not expect absolute realism where the "mission" was concerned (and I didn't get it), but I really enjoyed the movie. I would consider it to be a "feel good" experience, and...oh boy....do we need more of that after the past two years.

The last movie we went to a number of years ago was Brave, an animated film that looked good.  I would have liked to sit through it to the end but after 20 minutes neither Betty nor I could stand the noise and we left.  It was just too loud.

I fear Maverick will be the same especially with FA/18s costarring.  I'll be waiting for someone to tell me how loud it is.  I don't want it vibrating my rib cage.  That doesn't excite me...it just annoys me.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.
