PMDG: Is there still a custom key assignment option?

Buongiorno Mauro,

For a 2 way switch, I don't think you need to use the 'key down' and 'key up' functions of AAO.   I think you would simply assign 2 different commands.  Eg.  assign "TAXI LIGHT ON" and then trigger your hardware switch into it's on position and save that entry.   Then set up a new entry, assigned to "TAXI LIGHT OFF" and assign that to your hardware switch flipping into it's off position, and save.

Both of those two events would be set as "key down" events.

in bocca al lupo!

Buongiorno!

Thank you, you're right, some times things are so simple but I don't think in the right way.....

Sorry if I'll bother you again with some questions, but I'm trying tho set up the hardware at the best!

Crepi il lupo! Or like now seems more politically correct, viva il lupo!! 😄

@guenseli The man is a legend, a HUGE contributor to the hobby, and I go out of my way to accommodate his paint requests when he asks.  🙂

So far I've painted these for him....one of the most deserving for the very few folks I take special requests for. 😉

Then there was her big sister a did when the 747 released:

What can I say?  The man loves Lufthansa. 😁 And I happen to love LH too...so they get painted. 🙂

I don’t disagree that the man is a legend.

But if you do paints for him, he’s going to go flying when we really need him to be hunting down LVARs.

So probably best not to paint for him again, OK?

😉

Just a heads up: the beta Multicrew Experience was released a couple days ago for the PMDG 737.  Verbal commands and checklists are another option, vs keybinds... MCE works great with the 737.

I’ve actually never used MCE, but I’ve set up Voice Attack to do what I imagine MCE does. The advantage of voice attack is that it’s able to be fully customised.

The disadvantage - lots of work!

I’m very pleased, though, with how it’s coming along.

The next step will be getting voice attack to read variables from the sim - that will make a lot more responses possible.

There’s a plug-in for this on flightsim.to, but I’ll need to work out how to use it. If anyone knows how to do this, let me know!

For anyone who’s interested, my basic approach is:

Voice Attack for voice command input.

Convert voice commands to a virtual joystick button press using vJoy.

Use these virtual button pressed to trigger AAO and implement a change in the sim.

Was a bit of an experiment, but it actually works great.

You have a point.   @guensel No more paints for you until AFTER you've done all your coding magic and released it to the public!  Sorry, the internet has spoken, they do NOT want you enjoying the sim.  Now...GET BACK TO WORK! 🤣

I guess the same is true for me....I thought I retired from painting years ago...apparently the internet didn't think I was ready to retire yet. 🤔

Haha fair... I will point out that MCE is fully customizable too though. I chose it over FS2C because I could create my company's checklists and flows... and when something changes at work I just edit the MCE script, and it's actually NOT a lot of work, it's pretty easy.  Never used voice attack but I understand it's good for voice commands; MCE (and FS2C) do a little more than that though, for instance policing checklist responses and correcting you if you have something wrong etc.  Good stuff, but all dependent on what you want.

The dev mentioned that this MCE beta current customers are using will run roughly another 10 days, then public release.

Stearman, MCE is very customizable, but definitely not fully customizable. VoiceAttack (VA) is almost fully customizable, because you need to write your own program/logic from scratch! Of course, that's going to take a few hundred (?thousand) hours, so it's definitely not for everyone!

RE: "MCE (and FS2C) do a little more than that though, for instance policing checklist responses and correcting you if you have something wrong etc."

I'm using VA for checklists and flows. I haven't been doing much policing of checklist responses, but that's pretty easy to implement with VoiceAttack.

What I'm aiming for is something that's a hybrid between the checklist programs like FDC live cockpit/MCE and the more social programs like FS Passengers.

I know you work for an airline, am I right in thinking you're an ATP? Would you mind if I ask you a couple of questions? My VoiceAttack setup is a medium-term project that I'd like to release into the wild once it's complete. I have a few random queries!

@OzWhitey  the only thing I've been unable to make MCE handle correctly is checklist responses that involve reading actual data. For instance, we have a Before Takeoff checklist item "takeoff data", which involves the captain reading the relevant data from the FMC takeoff init page:  "24k reduced thrust, N1s 88.7, CG 22.4 for a trim of 5.14, runway 16L."  There's no way to have MCE (or any program as far as I know) understand what response to listen for, when all the data changes every time.  So the choices are to instead make this checklist a script where MCE just speaks and pauses in the right order for you to give the correct responses (but then MCE doesn't actually check the accuracy of your responses), or simplify this checklist item. I've gone this route - verifying all the data and then responding "set".

I'm going to assume this problem would affect any similar software though.  Other than this, it strikes me as basically entirely customizable. But to clarify, I'm just saying I personally like MCE the best but I'm not knocking any of the options; they're all great, and c'mon... who would have believed we'd be able to do any of this even 15 years ago!?

I am one of the airline guys on here, currently flying 737s. That doesn't mean I'm on expert on much, but I'm happy to attempt any questions you've got.
