Turbulence

Well, we're supposed to watch out for a few short moments in 15 minutes of video... I don't expect the poster to edit them, but giving some examples where to look for it wouldn't be asking too much, would it?

I guess not. But 15 mins ? this thread is six days old.

On to the point though there is still little evidence coming through yet a few people are reporting a problem. This thread is a perfect example where a remote computer sync, via a well trusted centralised dept of course, would be so useful for troubleshooting,

This statement makes sense. I could sympathise with the view some of the movements are not quite natural, but nowhere near crazy turbulence that ruins vfr.

I was expecting to see videos of aircraft almost uncontrollable, but what has been shown is mild turbulence at best.

Well...to be honest I am truly  disappointed that not a single person who previously also claimed to be truly bothered by this is reacting in support of my argument...

it is obvious that the people who have reacted so far are not affected by this issue...

Where are all the ones who just like me were complaining about this?...unless they have fixed the issue somehow (which I strongly doubt)

Well...ok then please answer me this:

How do you explain that many others are experiencing the same problem?...I mean they have all said it on this forum that they are experiencing the same problem...are they all lying then?...I don't think so...

If only all the others like me who are also complaining could also post videos so that everyone can see...only they are not posting...I am the only one posting...quite peculiar...I wonder why...

Those without the problem couldn't relate to what was being said about this turbulence without seeing it.  Nobody has ever said anybody was lying.

Now I've seen it, I am confused about calling this 'crazy' turbulence.  None of the videos show anything like crazy turbulence. All the videos seem to show turbulence I would expect in a light aircraft.

It doesn't even need to be "wild and crazy".

As described in the post, there are no variables to create turbulence (no mechanical sources, no frontal turbulence sources, nor wind shear).
The onlv variable is "IF aeroplane above ground THEN create convective turb".

That is wrong. There are plenty of days I've been up in a real world C152 or PA-28 and have had crystal clear skies with not even the slightest bump of turbulence whatsoever.
Apart from where another poster tested turbulence "in Antarctica at night" and had no turbulence, this is clearly a baked-in effect.

All the videos are in full sun and some over desert like terrain.  Such conditions shoud be producing some turbulence I would think.

My thoughts exactly. I cannot even count the times I flew in and piloted real world GA aircraft and NEVER encountered  turbulence

at all. No matter how I set the weather in the sim its there. SHAME....

Yes!...and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it to get rid of it...Asobo needs to fix this...soon!...but I need more supporters for this cause...we need a lot of votes for this to go through...can this be added to a "wish list" somewhere?...

Well, it doesn't appear to show what was described previously. I was literally expecting to see aircraft uncontrollable from how people described this 'issue'.

The cockpit view seems very smooth to me.  I have flown in conditions that were completely smooth, but most flights have turbulence of various degrees.  I posted near the beginning of this thread videos showing pilots literally throwing the control column all over the place to keep control. The videos just posted showing this 'issue' would hardly need any control input.

Make that 2 Cap. Great job on the videos. My flight parameters to a T. On one of the videos, I think the 2nd one, it looks like the entire wing is about to be ripped off.

All flights. Every flight. NONSENSE..... We need the SLIDER....

I'm considering getting off avsim altogether. The most snarky comments come from members with the most posts, probably never flew in or piloted a real world aircraft. I especially like responses to posts that have short responses. No effort at all....SHAME

Many of my posts are lengthy, but my 'huh?' was in response to a statement it looked like the wings were about to be ripped off - which clearly was so 'out there' that I couldn't believe it.

Sorry, now I watched all 4 videos, and I didn't see any instance that was even close to ripping off a wing. Could you please be more specific?

I guess this is the long version of @MrBitstFlyer 's "huh"... which to me was spot on in this context... ok, a bit snarky too, admittedly...

Edit: BTW, I'm totally in favour of adding some way to turn off all the turbulence. I just don't see anything that's close to justifying the original statement: "Its very annoying and disturbing especially for the vfr pilots among us (me included)...the whole vfr experience is taking a huge hit with this new wild and crazy over done "turbulence" that was added with the SU9 introduction.  I mean I agree that flying on rails is not totally realistic either...but common...they have clearly over exaggerated it with the new turbulence injection."

Apart from where another poster tested turbulence "in Antarctica at night" and had no turbulence, this is clearly a baked-in effect.

I am certain it is not a simple “baked in” effect. I have done extensive testing in the last few days using the default 172 in various locations around the US, both with Live Weather active and with the clear sky preset. The effect is very dependent on the surface temperature, and also the temperature lapse rate between the surface and the altitude of the aircraft. (Turbulence generated by thermal lift will be stronger when the lapse rate is steep). For a given altitude, the effect is stronger at midday than early morning, and in all cases, it decreases as you climb higher. They are clearly doing some kind of thermodynamic calculations in the atmosphere model to generate the effect - it is not a simple “turbulence off/on” condition as some have implied.

I no longer actively fly as a PPL in the r/w, but between 1976 and 2010 I logged close to 1000 hours in a variety of light aircraft. I started my flight training in the Mojave desert of California, (in summer) and thermal turbulence was a simple fact of life. It was always present every single day from about 10:00 AM on, and if I had a mid afternoon lesson scheduled, I could count on a rough ride. It was far worse than in any of the video clips a few posts above.

I have lived in the northeast since 1982, and did most of my r/w flying here. Yes, I have seen the air “smooth as glass” occasionally but more often than not there is always some bumpiness. True “smooth as glass” conditions were typically only found in mid-winter with a arctic high pressure zone in the area, and (interestingly) in mid-summer with a stagnant gulf airmass in the northeast when temperatures both at the surface and aloft were much higher than normal, and the resulting lapse rate very low.

Watching the clips linked above I can only say: “If you don’t like it in the sim, you would hate r/w flying”. None of the clips show anything beyond what I classify as “mild” turbulence. It does not look (or feel) at all unrealistic, and I am absolutely certain it is not a simple hard-coded, “baked in” effect.

However, I do think Asobo should implement a slider for those who do not like the effect, to either reduce it or eliminate it entirely.
