Coming back after a LONG absence...

Recommended Posts

Welcome back to the hobby. Your great handle has been used by many over the years, the most auspicious being Wing Nut Wings http://www.wingnutwings.com/ww/ I remember when it used to apply to someone with big ears too. 😀

Up till a few months ago I used to have FS95 on one of my old laptops and that still worked in Win 10. FS98 was a lot better. MSFS beats them all. Enjoy.

I really love Golden Age racers, but they have always been few and far between and I imagine that has not improved.

In addition to the Gee Bee package (available in the in-game marketplace) that was mentioned earlier in this thread, which is actually very very good - you get both the Model Z and the Model R2, and they are VERY well done! - there is a good freeware Wedell-Williams over at "the .to":

Alas no Laird-Turner Meteor (yet!) but the payware Boeing 247 is an outstanding piece of workmanship that comes complete with period-correct radio navigation beacons across the USA so you can practice flying "the beam" while honing your Morse code skills. It really is an excellent package, and so reasonable!:

On top of all that if you'd like to put the Gee Bees or other period aircraft to good use, this freeware scenery is really a gas, and deserving of it's own thread:

I would be more interested in a Travel Air Mystery Ship or a Laird Solution/Super Solution...

Don't know of those, but there is a Caudron Rafale 430, which is sort of similar.

Freeware seems dead and development seems limited to paints and scenery at best.

You are going to be surprised! 😉

Ok, it's you.  I definitely remember you, nice to come across you again.  Welcome back.

In 2009 there was an "incident" with the server here and maybe those who joined before '03 disappeared -- could be that's what happened to your "wingnut" handle.  I've been here since they acquired the IUP file archive and that was in like...1997...for some reason I remember a lot of the names.

I've been on Avsim since it was created although I took a long break from after FSX to about a year before FS2020 and now I know why my original account disappeared!

But I don't think I ever knew they acquired the IUP file archive. Flightsim.iup.edu was the address, I seem to recall? With items downloaded from there, the possibilities seemed endless especially with the release of Flight Sim Flight Shop (I think that was its name?). They were such exciting days, the early/mid-90s, certainly in the world of flight simulation, coupled with the fact I was only in my early 20s. Loved the mIRC server, too. So many good times.

I thought I had used it here but couldn't seem to get it to work.  I used it over at SimV and a few other places.

There’s another member here that uses Wingnut but he joined in 2011 and your current account is from 2009. Hard to say if you had another account prior to that with a name similar to it.

Post Edit: Perhaps Wingnut is your other account since both this one and Wingnut have posted from the same IP. If you can verify that other email I can merge the accounts together.

Something for every taste over at flightsim.to (I've downloaded hundreds of files from there).  I just use avsim and the official forum with the occasional visit to flightsim.com these days.  I too gave up simming for 5 or 6 years prior to MSFS coming out, partly because I was disillusioned and partly because of illness.

I had to spend a fair amount of cash building a new rig to use it though.

Where are you based, where do you like to fly and what type of flying do you like?  We can make a lot of suggestions based on that.

Welcome back!! Everyone else has hit on all of the points I would've made had I seen this post earlier. I will say though, it is a really exciting time to be coming back to flight simming. I've been using the platform since FS95 and I've been there for the entire ride, as well. I remember when the ACES team was disbanded and I thought it was all over. Of course X Plane has always been around and a great platform and Lockhead Martin took over the old FSX code and made an OK expansion off of it, but both of these publishers seldom gave updates or even further, or spoke to the community often. With MSFS, along with Asobo, we hear from these guys almost every week and their dedication to producing a revolutionary and groundbreaking sim is apparent. If there was ever a time to get back into flight sim, you've certainly picked the right time. Once again, welcome back!

Hello there Wing Nut and welcome back!

It is indeed a golden age for simming and, for now, getting even better!

My favourite 'freeware' GA is a mod for the standard G36 which you can find here:

https://flightsim.to/file/21221/bonanza-g36-improvement-project

It has so many features already (have a read of the above link), including having been updated with the new prop physics and fluid dynamic flight model.

Along with so many others I'm waiting for A2A's first release and, until that time, this mod is a worthy replacement!

Cheers

Yeah, didn't we all. 🙂  Just a few months ago I ended up dropping a hefty chunk of coin on a new Nvidia RTX 3070Ti graphics card.  That made all the difference in the world in the game play.  Better FPS, smooth motion, and I can now play in high resolutions and graphic settings/modes.  Even with a 4K monitor, I generally leave the sim set on 2560 x 1440 (2K).  That seems to be the sweet spot for me now, but I know I can push it a little higher if I need/want to.  🙂
