What zoom level are you all using in the cockpit?

I have a 32 inch monitor ~65 cm (26 inches) from my eyes. Realistic horizontal FOV for that setup should be 57° (Modern FOV Calculator (dinex86.github.io)). I spent hours in the sim using various means to find the correct zoom level for that FOV, and then comparing it to RL etc.  I found that a zoom level between 75 -80 seems to be the most realistic.

I ended up using zoom level at 80 with Tobii headtracker and I actually like it very much when flying in 2D. The main advantage is the right size of the scenery and a realistic feeling of speed.

So according to that calculator, my hFOV is 80°. How do the MSFS zoom settings map to the FOV?

That's a nifty little tool!

I used it for my set up and it gave me a FOV of 68°  (I'm only 14" away from my 38" monitor).

However, I was under the impression that MSFS's "zoom scale" is different to the actual FOV degrees, that we can set directly in say, X-Plane.

So I'm not sure what MSFS zoom setting relates to 68°.

This is what is so frustrating about MSFS - nobody knows what the zoom scale relates to!

My FOV with that tool is 62 degrees which equals 80 in MSFS (by setting the same view I see in Xplane at 62 degrees)  As your FOV is 68 degrees, I would imagine a zoom setting of approx 75 in MSFS would be pretty close.

Only Microsoft appears to know how the zoom setting relates to FOV.  I'm surprised that Microsoft hasn't clarified this after almost two years, and I'm also surprised some clever person hasn't worked it out 🙂

A couple of YouTube videos like the ones we had for FSX, but adapted to the MSFS values, would be very helpful.

Kind regards, Michael

So a Google search has demonstrated. How strange that this is a closely guarded secret! 😄

As MrBitstFlyer said, no one knows exactly. My observations tell me that the FOV to Zoom level ratio is not completely linear.

During testing using basic trigonometry and the FS2Crew Pushback distance measurement tool I came up with following numbers:

  • 80 FOV ≈  65 Zoom
  • 70 FOV ≈  72 Zoom
  • 66 FOV ≈  75 Zoom
  • 57 FOV ≈  82 Zoom
  • 56 FOV ≈  83 Zoom
  • 53 FOV ≈  85 Zoom

In my case I subtract about another 3 to 5 points from the zoom value, and then it looks about right.
