Sonora and the Sea of Cortez

Sonora and the Sea of Cortez

The route begins at Sahuaripa (MMSH) and our first stop is Aguaje Del Monte Airport (MMUQ) located in the cattle county near San Pedro De La Cueva.  Then a long 74nm leg to Guaymas (MMGM), an industrial port on the Sea of Cortez.  The route backtracks to the north for our next landing at Hermosillo (MMHO) located in the center of Sonora. Turning back to the west it is 50nm to Bahía De Kino Airport (MMBA) on the Sea of Cortez.  It is a short 15nm hop to Bahia De Kino Airport (MXCA) – yes it has the same name as our departure airport – located on Isla Tiburón.  Crossing the Sea of Cortez we overfly Isla Tiburón and Isla Turón landing at Punta San Francisquito Airstrip (MMSU) on the Baja Peninsula.  Our destination (ICAO:BHL) Bahía de los Ángeles ("Bay of the Angels") is 50nm to the north.

The plan was inspired after reading the linked NYT article: Mexico’s Indigenous Seri People

Aircraft

The route is 343nm and an aircraft capable a cruise speed of 160 knots should work.  I plan to fly the Cessna Grand Caravan in Highland Air Express livery.

What a treat. First visits to historic sights in the arid hill country, a quaint coastal town, a native Indian village, and a bit of modern industry. This is followed by stops at Tiburon and “little” San Francisco’s best restaurant. All capped off by a restful evening on LA’s beautiful beaches. Lovely itinerary for a trip to the less crowded side of California. 😉
