Barrow to Alert

Recommended Posts

Barrow / Utqiaġvik or Post-Rogers Memorial Airport is the farthest north airport of any in US territory. Alert, Nunavut, is a Canadian Forces airport and the northernmost airport in the world. The flight was done under live weather conditions. The C-17 is freeware and available from the .to site.

We are in the middle of nowhere, yet I’m (again) amazed how realistic the terrain looks in MSFS (I have never been here, but I have seen a few documentaries on TV that gave me the idea for this flight)

About 50 years ago my older brother was stationed at Alert for 2 years during his employment with the Department of Transport. Had some interesting stories to tell. It is almost a desert there in terms of precipitation. Temperatures in July can occasionally get up to 70 degrees F, but it never rained in the entire time he was there - only snow. During winter they had ropes between the buildings to hang onto when walking from one building to another during the winter whiteouts. The runway is just dirt and pilots tried to touch down in different spots to avoid creating ever deepening ruts in the surface. The C130s flew into there quite often.
