June 30, 20223 yr I love hearing different opinions, as it opens you up to life. I have even been known to change my own opinion occasionally based on a convincing argument! But it amazes me how much things can become quite uncivil over a fairly simple subject matter that shouldn't be contentious at all. Ricardo! You started this. It confirms my suspicion that you are a trouble maker! Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind). I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio. June 30, 20223 yr Also... why should there not be a combination of a train sim and a flight sim in some distant future? I mean trains itself are on the roadmap. Fully simulated trains should be possible in the engine itself. And they want to improve the sim on the ground for helicopters. How much and if it is enough isn't clear of course. You can argue how much improvement that would bringt for the flight sim aspect.... but for the train sim? The whole world? I bet there are many people that would absolutely love that. And speaking of the ground. I often ride up the virtual version of Alpe D'huez in Zwift. I was a bit disappointed that the iconic bends are mostly missing in the sim.

A friend could drive the train with your passengers to the airport station, where they exit and start boarding the plane and so on. I'd love that, even though I don't see myself driving the train. Because someone can't walk from a building out to a parked aircraft (taking a few minutes) it kills the immersion ?? Maybe a slight exaggeration ? 😅 Walking around would be a nice-to-have feature, but its absence doesn't diminish the pleasure or involvement of simulating flying. Besides which, if I can suspend disbelief as I sit in front of a computer in a spare bedroom, I can walk round the house first to pretend that I'm walking out over the grass to my Tiger Moth at Duxford. 😉 Now, completely off-topic - what's it like living in Kiribati ? When I was young, I read 'An Island to One's Self' by Tom Neale, and, at school, 'A Pattern of Islands' by Arthur Grimble, and they fascinated me. I was out there as a merchant ship's officer, and part of me still wishes I had stayed. 🙂 Surely not everybody was kung fu fighting. https://rationalwiki.org

June 30, 20223 yr I notice people are getting bent out of shape over the "immersion killer" statement but I'm pretty sure Ricardo was just talking about his experience and isn't saying this is how everyone else should feel. If MS had the resources and tech to make a world simulator it would still provide an amazing flight simulation experience. If the guy wants to walk around his plane in a more realistic way then more power to him. 5800X3D. 32 GB RAM. 1TB SATA SSD. 3TB HDD. RX 9070XT.

It isn't as if Asobo are going to put everything on hold because someone mentioned they would like the ability to walk around. Someone will probably develop it outside of Asobo. Orbx did a version, but apparently they aren't interested anymore. I guess they want to be simmarket these days. Myself, I could live without it, but see the attraction to actually walking around instead of floating everywhere.

June 30, 20223 yr I get that some here are always nervous of Asobo getting distracted on "less important" features rather than focusing on some of the core sim areas that needs improvements... but it's not to say that key members of the team like Seb and his peers would be taken away from core areas of development related to flight itself.. MS has very deep pockets and is raking in the revenue with MSFS, it can always assign other devs or hire new ones for such expansion areas. It'd be great to have a 1st person view camera that effectively simulates traversing all solid surfaces a few feet above the ground automatically i.e. human viewpoint :), rather than needing to control all axis of movements in a go-anywhere drone cam. Related to this, I also wish they could allow some settings so that the current rendered view is more akin to what the human eye sees rather than what a camera see (i.e. similar depth of focus, similar dynamic range so that something vastly different in brightness as the outdoor scene to the cockpit interior can both be visible without one being washed out or too dark, etc). But coming back to the larger topic of world simulation, I still firmly believe MS has bigger plans for the twin earth rendering/simulation tech, particularly maybe simulation of trains, driving, sailing, etc.... all of which require a moving viewport mechanism that tracks the solid surface at a certain height :), one application of which is.... walking 🙂 Imagine one day when the world simulation in MSFS at ground level is at the visual level of something like their upcoming Forza Motorsport game. Apart from other sim applications, just even something like virtual tourism/exploration/VR applications open up a universe of possibilities. Embrace what it could become, not limit it to "just" a Flight Simulator. I mean if you look at Flightsim.to you'll soon see this is much more than just about flying fancy airplanes already, open your minds! The fact is, MSFS already is what you are talking about, to a large extent. One can drive (there are a number of driveable cars, buses, even a bike!), and there is a plethora of driveable boats and ships; gliders, blimps, and much other stuff that greatly enhances the experience. The website flightsim.to has an incredible array of addons, most of them freeware, that add much realism (e.g. hundreds of ships plying the waters of the world). And as others have pointed out, the drone --- which is an amazingly versatile feature that admittedly takes some time and patience to learn --- allows you to simulate walking anywhere. (True, it doesn't show your physical body, but in my case at least I don't see that as a drawback). MSFS is a fantastic achievement, still less than two years old and getting better all the time. No problem in wanting more, but let's appreciate what we already have -- which is far, far more than any earlier sim has provided. Edited June 30, 20223 yr by cobalt
