Is it safe to upgrade to Windows 11 with FS2020

Featured Replies

How many of you all "upgraded" Win 10 to 11 without doing a fresh install?  This is my dilemma and if there are no benefits for MSFS w/ Win 11 I don't have a problem waiting until I have to do a clean install, if n when.

I did.
Windows Update has for some considerable time now done what is essentially a clean installation in any case and then
adds back the programs' user files and registry entries.
If there were no problems before the update, there will be none after it either.

I'll be interested to hear how it goes @macpilot . I am also considering upgrading but am...nervous!

I just rebuilt my PC a few weeks back and decided to do a fresh Win 11 Pro installation as it was all new hardware. So far I have had zero issues whatsoever with MSFS 2020. Once I did all the updates I used Macrium Reflect to image my boot drive in case I wanted to try Win 10 so I have a backup if needed. So far I do not see any need to go back to Windows 10. I did read somewhere that Win 11 is better optimized for the newer generations of CPU such as my i7-12700K but I am not sure if that is the case but my PC runs well

There are some updates to CPU scheduling. So if you run a new CPU like the Intel 12xxx there are optimizations.

There really is no need to be nervous.
There are no contributors to this topic who are reporting anything but success.
If you leave the task to Windows Update, you will not have a problem, unless you already have a problem of course.

Been using windows 11 since it was released its great and seen DX12 updates  which cant hurt since MSFS starting to get DX12 implemented

I upgraded to windows 11 and had some weird stutter/lag issues in msfs. First, when I'd load a flight plan in the world map area, the Sim would get very stuttery. Also, as soon as contrails appeared, the Sim's fps would but cut in half and very stuttery. I searched the forums and it was only reported by one other that I could find. I tried everything to fix it. I eventually completely reinstalled windows and 10 and all was back to normal.

Well, if it ain't broke...

One gotcha not related to MSFS:

Drivers for older printers.

Hardware: i7-8700k, GTX 1070-ti, 32GB ram, NVMe/SSD drives with lots of free space.
Software: latest Windows 10 Pro, P3Dv4.5+, FSX Steam, and lots of addons (100+ mostly Orbx stuff).

Upgraded ($ Free) from WIN10 to WIN11 (Oct 2021).

No problems.

As far as I know it is still a Free Upgrade.

I didnt know you could upgrade to windows 11 and not have to reinstall MSFS. How about things like mods from flightsim.to and Orbx ect? Is it simply a case of upgrading and everything working as it was?

A bit strange question to me. Windows 11 is from Microsoft. MSFS is from Microsoft. Don't you think that they test their applications before releasing a new OS version? 😉

Over here Win 11 runs perfectly fine with MSFS, just like Win 10 did

Yes.
Of course you have to select the keep everything option when updating.
