I would not wonder if some people here regularly look up to the sky and state how unrealistic is that!

The other day I looked at the sky IRL and thought the clouds looked a little too sprite-like. No joke!  There was a weird coloration between the cloud edges and blue sky that just looked fake to me. I guess that's proof that we're living in a simulation, LOL.

Even if Asobo created the perfect 100% accurate rendition of the sky and clouds then it would still look terrible to some. Sometimes the real sky does look unrealistic! If you really want to see terrible fire up a vanilla FSX or P3D installation.

I'll just run through my thoughts, seeing as it's far too hot for VR currently (in England.....too hot....blimey!)

All in My Opinion, so not factual of course 😉;

  1. The clouds were better and more detailed pre-SU5, especially in VR the drop in detail was like night & day!
  2. The live weather was just fine up to SU7
  3. Asobo bent over for the vocal VATSim crowd and implemented METAR, not everyone wanted it.
  4. They clearly did not test it thoroughly enough as here we are with SU10 Beta and it's still not working 100% (METAR bubbles, sudden transitions still happening)
  5. It's going to be a long time until they can get it "right", I'll say SU15.
  6. It's still good now though in SU10 Beta, better than SU9 and I care not for comparing to A N Other Sim as I don't own any, I'm only interested in MSFS, so when Asobo screw up as they have done with METAR Integration it annoys me....especially when it was just "fine" before.
  7. it's still 35,000c here 🥵

This will be a huge achievement though if it's that good by SU15.  Because then you will have accurate weather, which the VATSIM crowd wants, and you will have nice variation of clouds in the simulator.  BTW, SU 15 is not that far way.  If we get 4 SUs in one year, SU 15 is only about 1.25 years away.

All I know is, you can't take away live weather working with METAR.  The VATSIM crowd will have a huge riot if that happens.

I thought they were slowing down Sim Updates? either way yeah you're probably right will be a it longer than that. All I want is pre-SU7 live weather and continuous improvements (read overturning regressions...) of the clouds, by all means keep the METAR just make it work seamlessly.

Maybe not so simple to implement (I have no idea) but a simple on/off switch in the options?

LIVE WEATHER ON/OFF (already there)

If Live weather is on, have the following options (otherwise grayed out):

METAR ON/OFF - switch between current metar/organic natural live weather blend OR no metar and only natural organic live weather

REALISTIC VISIBILITY ON/OFF - switch between visibility always good unless in a transparent puff cloud for VFR community, or realistic visibility like in the real world in most places where visibility is limited even on a very nice day - such as humid areas or bad air quality, etc. and clouds that are actually opaque like real clouds are not the current overcast model that you can see the ground all the way until you break through the "top" of the layer, or those super transparent puffs all around.

LIVE WEATHER FREEZE - "freeze" the live weather where it is at the time you freeze it so no updates occur, so we do not get these obscene transitions when we are ascending from departure or descending to arrival. But I don't think we would need this if they trashed the METAR or gave us an option to turn that word not allowed off.

At one of the Twitch Q&A, Martial already said that they won’t go back to the non-METAR version of live weather before live weather was integrated with METAR.  The community specifically upvoted a question to the top for the Twitch Q&A, to ask Asobo specifically if they could have an optional non-METAR version of live weather, like we had at release, Martial said no, that they aren’t going back to that.

Since the community already created such a question before about having a non-METAR option for live weather and that question was upvoted to the top, then asked at the Twitch Q&A, and Asobo (Martial) said no, I doubt that asking for this a second time will get anywhere (ie. it’s probably a waste of time to try a second time).

After several hours in the beta, my very unscientific observation is still not what we had pre-SU5, but definitely improving. A quick skip between RJFT and RJFF in some very dramatic, layered cloudscapes brought some of the wow-factor I remember from the earlier builds.

Still a way to go, still getting some very unrealistic steamy popcorns too frequently, still not the leap forward I was hoping SU10 would be, but feeling a bit more optimistic about the direction now.
