Some Button Assignments Show Red - For No Reason

Hi, last night I was assigning some buttons and after I added them, they showed in red... which would indicate the hardware was not present.  However, the hardware was clearly present, as it was used to assign the button.  It would then ignore those button presses. I found that I could fix it by going to the Hardware menu and selecting "New Hardware" (if I recall correctly) and that restarted the app with the assignments no longer red. Is this a bug or was I doing something wrong?

Sorry, I've never heard of something like this before. In general, AAO will disregard a device when it causes trouble (=error/exception). Sounds like it could be a USB device with power problems? Maybe turn off Windows EPM for this device (Tools menu).
