Anyone flying extensively in Papua New Guinea

Featured Replies

Wikipedia has a list of airports in PNG and there are about 75 of them. Here's a list of the actual airports in PNG to which the Missionary Aviation Fellowship flies, they say it numbers 75.

https://www.pngfacts.com/png-information-directory/where-maf-operates-in-papua-new-guinea

So apparently the MAF flies to those 75 but not to the hundreds of tiny ones without codes.

EDIT: oops I listed the wrong guy. It's wantok who has done the PNG strips on flightsim.to.

Nah, PC-6

All airports with ICAO codes in PNG start with AY

The original message this thread links to a file by wantok. But that file and 4 others are packed together in the bottom link I posted 2 messages above. It is Wantok's giant PNG pack of 5 files that affect hundreds of PNG strips and includes 15 handmade airports. So just one  pack of 5 files does tons of mods.

Of course we've all seen Ryan's Missionary Bush Pilot channel on YT, but has anyone followed in his footsteps?  It seems like there's an insane number of bush landing strips there. As an example, this Flightsim.to mod has fixes for over 400 airstrips!  Just browsing Flightsim.to I came across three or four pages of freeware airstrip mods.  Orbx also has a freeware mesh.

Has anyone invested any time there?  Are these mods/mesh good? I'm thinking of firing up the Kodiak there and using Neofly... my fear is I will never leave 😄

If you've spent any time there in the sim, I'd love to hear about your experience.

I spent some time flying there in FSX, with the PNG Bushtrekker scenery package. Great fun and some very challenging airstrips whose creators must have either been drunk or just hated pilots.

If such a package came out now for MSFS or X-Plane it would be an instant purchase from me.

Stock MSFS comes pretty close. In fact, I'm willing to bet that it exceeds the FSX package for sure.

EDIT: But get the fixes posted by @Fielder a few posts above.

Intel Core i7 8700k clocked to 4.6GHz, GTX1080Ti, 32GB DDR4 RAM, MSFS installed on NVMe drive, Windows 11, Dell 27" 60Hz Monitor + Dell 24" 60Hz Monitor. Resolution 1920x1080. Game Mode on, GPU scheduling enabled (Win11). MSFS settings: High-End for airlines, Ultra for GA.

The Milviz Porter is absolutely perfect for these strips.  The Kodiak is decent but the Porter is even more capable.

Wantok's terrain fixing file does add a LOT of fixes for areas of clouds baked into terrain.  You want that!

I agree with Aktorsyl, that the default strips in MSFS are as good as the payware FSX ones... with the difference being that there are literally - not exaggerating - hundreds of crazy strips instead of a dozen ;).

Also, don't get super hung up on just Papua New Guinea. The other side of the island, Papua Indonesia portion, has strips that are arguably even better!

PNG is insane!!!!  Flew there with a group a couple months back and some of the strips were nearly invisible until you were right on them.  Fortunately I had 'acquired' an EMB-110 that was parked at an airport just across the border in West Papua, Indonesia.  Basically abandoned it at the last strip we landed it.  Haven't been back to Indonesia since.  😉

Seriously though, PNG is a challenge but definitely worth it if you're into the bush thing.  I know the Kodiak and Porter are great choices but you can't go wrong with the 208 if you just want to use a default plane.

.One trap for those flying in PNG is Densityy Altitude.  If you are having problems read up on it.  Because of the high altitudes of many of the strips and the very hot weather there there are many strips that can only be flown to early in the morning.  A fantastic place both in real life and in the sim with some of the nicest people you will find anywhere.

Does the sim and the Kodiak properly model this?

How's the satellite imagery there? I'd imagine it's pretty cloudy a lot of the time therefore the ground textures might be pretty bad. whats the word?

Good question... I wonder if the Google textures might be better than Bing in this area... anyone tested both out using the map data mod?

And for the best, the Kodiak.

The Milviz Pilatus Porter might also do good there. The 310 is a lovely aircraft but its high approach speed and no turbo makes it ill suited for these strips.

Having just purchased the JustFlight Analog CARAVAN I am sure I'll try some of those Papua Challenges !

Wow this enhanced Caravan is really a beauty, in all aspects, from the cockpit and systems graphics and functionalities to the flying !

Yep and nope.  I've done several tests in PNG and Papua Indonesia, and Google has never been better. I've seen no difference with the updated Bing, but Google has always been worse in terms of texture res and color matching.

I will say that Bijan's trees make a large difference here though.
