PSA - New AMD Processors Announced

Recommended Posts

FYI - AMD announced their latest gen 7000 series processors last night. They appear to be about 30% faster in single threaded performance over similar 5000 series SKUs. (e.g. 5600x vs. 7600x). The new processors require a new motherboard (new socket) and RAM (DDR5), so even though the price points are similar, it'll still be a sizable investment to upgrade.

Recommendation: If you are long overdue for an upgrade and need to upgrade your mobo and RAM anyway - this is a good time to do so.

HOWEVER, if you can wait a few more months, the X3D versions of these processors are rumored to be available in Q1 of next year. These versions will have a much larger cache, which is known to be specifically beneficial for MSFS. The 5800 X3D for example is amazingly 30% faster than the 5800X - and the 7800X3D will likewise probably be 30% faster than the just announced 7800X when it comes to MSFS. Might be worth waiting for.

Finally - Intel will announce their new generation of CPUs in late September - you might also want to see what they have up their sleeve.

I think its a good time to sit back and wait a few months to see what difference both the Intel and AMD lineup have on MSFS (or P3D for that matter). I know we've seen mentions in the past of xx% improvement in single core performance when a new processor appears but that doesn't always equate to the same performance increase in the sim.

It will be interesting to see the difference between AND and Intel this time around....I'm keen for an update even from my 58000X3D but will wait and see what processor  provides the biggest benefit in sim. Like @enright mentions, I'd suggest its going to be the new X3D.

FYI - The 5800 X3D is now on sale at most retailers, for a price ($384) that is close to the original MSRP for the 5700X, Looks like they are trying to clear inventory before the release of the 7000 chips - tempting.

I was going to start putting together components for my new PC to replace the one in my sig.

I’ll hold fire for the time being given this announcement. Thanks for the info @enright. 👍. 5.7Ghz is astonishing.

What’s the situation with P3D v5? Similar improvements in speed? I have no plans to buy MSFS.

Hi Ray,

For what its worth I noted almost no difference in P3D between my 5800X and now the 5800X3D. I tested in a variety of settings but didn't really notice any improvement difference in either FPS or overall smoothness.

In MSFS I noticed a significant improvement in FPS (particularly in complex scenery with heavy AI workload) going from the 5800X to the 5800X3D.

All other components remained the same and I didn't do a reinstall - literally just replaced the chip. Probably the best/easiest upgrade for $$ spend I've ever done.

Thanks. Maybe things could improve if LM tweaked how things are processed. Bit disappointing the 30% improvement never made it into that sim. Shows why the buyer needs to be aware.
