RTX3080 vs RX3090TI

Recommended Posts

VRAM usage went really high with 3090 (good it was being used). All cores had an even load. And there was zero stutters with no need to lock frame rate.

It reduces it. When DX12 was "working" at the start of the beta, I got excellent multithreading on my 12900KF. This translated not so much in significantly higher fps, but the sim was more smooth and fluid than ever. Doing some benchmarks and the 1% low and 0.1% low fps was higher than without DX12 i.e. less stutters. I think DX12 in a working state also holds a promise for higher headroom for CPU intensive tasks, i.e. increasing the LODs, AI traffic etc, CFD calculations etc. So a good implementation of DX12 is definitely something to be excited about.

That's promising thanks!  So are we not going to have a good implementation of DX12 for the official SU10 release?

If I would have to guess, I would guess no. I think they need more time. But then again we might get lucky 🍀

Unless you can't play, wait for the 40 series, and RDNA3 to hit channels. That should be by November.

Between Zen 4, Raptor Lake, Lovelace, RDNA3, and the used mining cards about to hit the market, this is probably the absolute worst time possible to be buying new computer parts.

Further, because mining just imploded, we should expect there to be a glut of new hardware in the market as well. nVidia was trying to reduce the TSMC wafer order, and TSMC told them no joy.

AMD should also be able to swarm chips onto the market in significant quantity, partly because they've got a major manufacturing advantage over both nVidia and Intel, and partly because Intel's delays meant they were able to build up volume for release.

So yeah. Upgrading just before all that hardware hits is a bad idea. Better to dig into your frame times and see what's holding you back, and use that to do upgrades when the hardware wave has hit.

On CPU usage, I suspect it is more cache hungry. I'm running a 5800X3D and 3080 TO in Dx11 (VR), my CPU frametimes are low enough that it could do 60fps. It's my GPU that's getting over saturated and slowing things down. But I'm also effectively running at 5k in the headset. I have not yet tested performance in standard mode (3Kish), but it seems fine and vram usage is less than 10Gb.

That is, unless I turn up world resolution beyond a certain point. Then it overflows the vRam and the game drops to 1fps. Oops...

I built an identical system as the one in my sig with a 3080TI (EVGA FTW3) about 6 weeks ago, I sold that for a tidy profit and built a new system this time with a EVGA FTW3 3090. I have seen a performance difference with the 3090, it is not earth shatteringly different but enough to get me to a solid 50fps in complex aircraft like the Fenix or PMDG with high to Ultra settings. It is nice to have 24GB VRAM as well.

I definitely wouldn't pay for a 3090TI but here in Canada there are some 3090's going for a song. Waiting for a 40xx is also an option and would give your utility company time to bring their standby nuclear reactor online 🤣

I haven't tried SU10 Beta but I am excited by what it will bring.

So far I am very happy with the 12700K & 3090 combination

Happy Friday All !

The first bootup of the beta, without enabling DX12 nor DLSS, gave me slightly better frame rates but very much fewer stutters. Night and day. Not everyone had the same experience.

I would not buy new hardware unless you are really outdated until you first try the beta or the official release of SU10. By the way both DLSS and DX 12 helped things even more. But the sim update patch alone did worlds of good for me. I can't say the improvement is normal, maybe it was a fluke when it helped my situation.

Agree. Better to wait and see what SU10 brings. And as I mentioned before DX12 if implemented successfully will likely bring very decent multi threading which all modern CPUs will take advantage of.

So with the 3080 I7-10700K it should be playable?

Any one with this config where it's running fine?

MSI Tomahawk Z790, I7-13700K, DDR5 6000mhz, MSI 4090, 3x SSD 980 PRO, Corsair 360 Liguid CPU cooler, Corsair H1200V2 power.

Before you spend on a top end GPU most expensive part of the PC now you should consider this.

CPU Bottleneck! This Scenario can cost you 50% FPS using a 3080 Ti (4770K, 6700K, 8700K vs 12900K) - YouTube

And things in the industry are not looking good, reports are they are looking at job losses in the near future.

Surprise surprise.

Nvidia is sitting on the 3000 series for ridiculous prices while people wait for the 4000 series.
I am really glad that Nvidia is getting what they deserve after serving the mining market and miliking us.

Well.

In 3rd party airport like Aerosoft Cologne it's only 25 FPS.

So I was hoping the 3090 would bring it to 30 fps or more

My guess is that the limit is the software, not the hardware and that given time, these addons and the simulator itself will perform better.
It would be a very expensive way to gain 5 fps and that switching off your frame rate counter would save a fortune.

At what resolution are you running the sim? Are you CPU limited or GPU limited?

If you are CPU limited, you can throw a mining rig of 3090Ti's at the sim, it's not going to give you a single FPS more.

Go into dev mode and look at the timings. If your CPU takes longer for one cycle than your GPU, you are CPU limited.

I don't have any performance problems at Aerosoft CGN, with a 10700k and a 3070 at 1080p. But that's because I have online traffic turned off and use reasonable settings for Terrain LOD. These hammer the CPU In MSFS.

In general, unless your at 4k or in VR, the GPU is just not the bottleneck in MSFS. It's all CPU bound. So...no, a 3090Ti will not make any difference if that's the case.
