Does XPlane 12 put snow on the ground based on the Metar?

Featured Replies

Seeing some cool shots.  Just wondering is the weather engine in the sim smart enough to depict snow on the ground based on the real world weather report (pretty much like MSFS)?

Yes, if the metar reports precipitation. You'll also get snowy or icy runway conditions. If the temperature warms up or the metar changes, the snow will melt and form puddles (dinamically). It's something you need to see to really graps, it's really cool but hard to describe.  You can download the demo and test it before buying.

I wonder if it also accounts for past metars (e.g. heavy snow cover if it's been snowing from hours, less if it just started snowing). Albeit that would be more complex to model, so I'm not requiring such level of detail!

Also, Ben basically confirmed that the weather system will be open for 3rd parties to further improve things, so that's great news!

Hi Murmur, don't quote me on this but I think XP12 also downloads the previous cycle to do what you mention.

Haven't been able to test and I had to reinstall the sim due to corruption of many scenery files during the D/L process 😕 but I will try to look at it... Finding the right spot to test is the most difficult ...

I don’t think it keeps track of historical weather but I would be glad to be proven wrong.

X-Plane 12 does NOT generate snow according to METAR. You need to manually configure weather to get snow/ice on the ground. At KTRK now. It's snowing for real but X-Plane shows rain with no snow on the ground..

Does the METAR indicate snow?

A known issue that is being addressed by LR.

I was able to manually configure weather to get snowy ground cover, but if I try to get actual snow falling by turning the precip up and the temp down to ~ -10C, I get what looks like snow slowly coming down, but it's grey/black and looks more like volcanic ash than snow.

Anyone know if there's a shader mod or other cure that'll make the snow falling appear white rather than dark grey to black?
