Windows 11 update 22h2 - Beware

Recommended Posts

My advice to my clients at work is if it is not broken do not fix it. Basically unless there is a specific good reason to upgrade to Win11 stay with Win10 for the time being and let the dust settle a bit longer.

As expected, we have a batch of older users who will need to be dragged to Win11 eventually kicking and screaming, and also a handful of young guys wanting to show off their "elite" PC skills and superior knowledge by finding excuses to jump in and upgrade straight away. Basically they are doing it for EPEEN and street credit rather than having any real reason for the upgrade.   All up, out of maybe 200 PCs laptops and servers I manage maybe a dozen are now Win11 after 12 months.  That said half a dozen of that 200 are ancient DEC Alpha's running VMS and another 20 or more run Linux, so it is more like a dozen out of 175,  so maybe 15% of our Windows systems have migrated.  Our latest batch of new laptops a few months back were purchased as enterprise "Win 10 downgrades" .

We are not seeing any serious issues with the upgraded systems - but by the same token we are also not seeing anything that encourages me to recommend an immediate roll out across the company either.  I expect we will roll out Win11 company wide in Q1 2023 .  Even then, older devices due for retirement will probably be left on Win 10 until replaced.

Hard disagree. I went W11 because I was building a new PC for a new game that used new tech and I wanted everything to communicate as well as it could with my new 3080 TI and i9. I had planned to just "update" my old PC for the sim but the new recommended RAM and GPU's and CPU's didn't work with my mobo and there were all sorts of restrictions on the kind of memory I could use and at with what combo.

It was all overwhelming. So I went with the newest marketed stuff at the top dollar because I didn't want to encounter a BSoD and be told I couldn't pair X with X.

But I'm here anyway.

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.

Need your help guys ….,

Since the update the taskbar stays at the bottom of the screen which is behind the glare of my cockpit.

Before the update I used the Taskbar1.1 app to place it at the top where I can see it.

Eveh a Reg hack that I found ( 0.3 to 0.1 ) does not work.

Who is the hero that knows how to put the taskbar back at the top of the screen ?

same link as above.

I can drag the taskbar to any side of the screen. Or move it to another screen by making the other screen my 'main display' in Display Settings.

I put the value at 00 which is supposed to be the left side. But now for some reason it can be dragged to top, right, bottom, or left just like windows 10.

So try 00 instead of 01, 02, 03.

Do a system restore backup first in case you mess this up.

Hard disagree.

The reference was to people upgrading a work PC where nine times out of ten they are spending most of the day logged into a command prompt on one of the Linux servers accessing a database or running a genetic analysis.

Obviously some people have genuine reasons to want to or genuinely need to upgrade to Win11.  But that does not mean everyone needs to or is better off.

Sorry, I misread what you were trying to say.

My windows 11 experience summary, i'm happy I did.  So I upgraded to a 5800x3d recently and ran cinebench, low scores, couldn't figure out why.  I updated to 11 today and now my scores are what they should be.  Also, cinebench was seeing my 5800x3d as 6c/12t, the specs for my old 3600.  This is a 8c/16t cpu and since the update its reading that way, with the higher scores.  Also in the sim, its so smooth now and I noticed the work is spread on all cores in dx12 while with windows 10 it was not.  So i don't know if something wasn't updated when i changed cpus in windows 10 and now that i updated to 11, it updated something related to the 5800x3d? Either way my cpu is using all cores now and i got a performance bump when switching to 11.  Wish I had done it sooner.  No issues with MSFS, even better now.

So am I the last person left who has that problem? Steam games with VR (with HP Reverb G2) are working just fine.

If I'm the only person who has that problem I guess it won't get fixed. I can't even go back to the previous version of Win11, as it's been past 10 days.

I did turn off holographic shell. It made no difference.

Then the issue is probably on your end and something you may of done, I + others are running WMR (G2) in Win11 just fine (albeit with the HolographicShell fix from time to time)

I haven't done anything apart from installing the 22h2 update. Before that everything was working fine. The symptoms are the same as described here, really low FPS (like under 10) on the title screen, black bars around the picture.

I really don't think it's because of anything else I've done on my side.

I can't even go back to a pre 22h2 install of Win 11, because the image being offered with the Media Creation Tool is now 22h2.
