Looking for an upgrade to get more FPS

Recommended Posts

I currently have a 10900K @ 5.1GHz, 32GB RAM and 3090. I have 3 4K screens and the new multi-view set up. DLSS set to balanced. Running around 20-30 fps with FPS counter saying "Limit by CPU thread". Changing DLSS to performance makes no difference.

I assume this means putting in a 4090 won't make a difference and I need a CPU upgrade? Maybe to the next Intel 13900K or AMD 7950X in a new PC?

HT on or off?  What is speed (freq) and CAS latency of your RAM?

I don't think a CPU upgrade would yield more than a few percent more fps. Is your GPU working at 100%?

Thanks for the replies. I've updated to the latest NVIDIA driver today and changed to DX12.

Testing at KJFK. I had the terrain LOD slider at 200 with 21 fps. I reduced it to 100 at got 24 fps. Same result with 50.

Looks like I'm limited by GPU so a 4090 might help?

Don't forget that a 4090 may require a new Power Supply. Based on a number of YT and Internet reviews, you should have at least a 1000 watt ATX3.0 (yes 3.0 not 2.0) PS. ATX3.0 will give you native connectors as well as the ability to handle the large transient voltage spikes. A 1200 watt PS would be even better for future proofing (and depending on what CPU you are running). You may want to keep in mind the issue of melting power cables -- see

My system is similar, except I have a 3080, and at similar settings (4K Ultra Preset DLSS performance) in a complex scenario (KLAX, PMDG 737) my GPU's frametime of 16 ms is around half my main thread frametime of 30 ms at that setting. Changing back to TAA still has me CPU limited and GPU frametime only goes up to 19ms. Either option gives me around 33 FPS and everywhere else simpler it is higher.

Even my main thread frametime is 10 ms faster than yours, which is strange because the 10850K should be slightly slower than your 10900K. There is no way your 3090 should be delivering 3 times the frametime, which equates to 1/3 the performance, of my 3080.

There is something wrong with your setup and I'd start by running a program like HwInfo to make sure your CPU and GPU are running at full speed when running MSFS.

According to Tom's Hardware the new Intel cpus will work with DDR 4 memory and not require DDR5 (expensive) like AMD 7000 series cpus.

Your only using 9.9GB of GPU memory upgrading your GPU will do very little you will be even more CPU bound, and for 2 grand you could upgrade you MB unless you have a Z690MB already and a 13900K and save money.

A Z690 will take a 13900k and keep your DDR4 memory.

CPU Bottleneck! This Scenario can cost you 50% FPS using a 3080 Ti (4770K, 6700K, 8700K vs 12900K) - YouTube

Or if you are ok with waiting this may be better.

I found NO fps increase using DLSS Quality - probably because I'm mainthread limited. In your pic of the developer mode fps counter your GPU and mainthread frametimes are almost identical. In any case since they seem to be balanced I don't imagine you'd see much if any improvement regardless of which one you upgraded. Seems to me three 4k monitors are going to kill performance on ANY system. 3840 X 3 = 11,520 pixel width...NVIDIA spec shows "Maximum Digital Resolution = 7680 X 4320.

Thats for a single monitor, any recent high end nvidia cards can run (3) 4k monitors at there full resolution.

Get a 13900K with a 4090. You can pre order a system 2 weeks today. That’s what I’ll be doing. 64Gb DDR5 too. Liquid cooled.
