Confused about AMD Fidelityfx sharpening

Recommended Posts

Is AMD Fidelityfx Sharpening strictly for AMD cards, like DLSS is for NVidia cards, or can this feature be used on NVidia cards as well? (I didn't dare trying it yet on my NVidia card 🙂 )

Thanks.

Kind regards,
Hans van WIjhe

Thanks.

It's an AMD technology which works cross platforms, and fine here with my RTX3060

It's selective Sharpening, normal when you sharpen an image it will sharpe everything on the screen, "AMD Fidelityfx Sharpening" is like one of the sharping setting in photophop, it looks at the image and sharpens edgers/targets some points etc. Think of it as "smart" and not a slege hammer in how the image is sharpened. Like anything if you go mad and know what your looking for you will see it if over done.

Current setting for me @1440p are

DX12

TA

Renderscale 120

AMD Fidelityfx Sharpening 120

Thank you David, I'm on DX11 and DLSS and can use a bit of more sharpening to (partially) solve the blurring on numbers and characters that DLSS brings with it.

that's why me and probably David are using TAA instead of DLSS until MS/Asobo applies a mask for glass cockpits so the fineprint can be read again. I found that AMDs sharpening does not really help here but let us know your findings

It didn't help here much, either, if any. But at my age nothing is as sharp as it used to be 🙂 Disadvantage, it might be my imagination though, of TAA is that the video card (mine is a RTX3070) is working much harder and temps are going up as well.

I've tested the new in-sim AMD Sharpening and compared the results with the "Image Sharpening" (or "Image Scaling", depending on your video card/machine) included in the NVCP (nvidia control panel), and have to say that the one provided by nvidia provides the most effective sharpening for MSFS. It's probably fair to say that's a matter of taste. You can also regulate the amount of sharpening applied by moving the sliders in the NVCP App (mine are set between 20% and 30%, running 2K).

I've also abandoned the in-sim setting for "Anisotropic Filtering" (set to none inside the sim) in favor of the NVCP's, set to 16X. In my case I've noticed a much better sharpening and definition of all taxi lines and ground marks at every MSFS airport.

I have a Radeon rx 5700 xt. How do I engage AMD FSR? I read that FSR 2.0 should come with SU11
but FSR 1.0 is already in MSFS (or not?). Do I have to put down the Render Scale from 100 to 60 and thats it?
searched everywhere but could not find something.

switched back to DX12, see grab above, and temps are much more moderate, fan is not running full speed anymore. plus the clouds look even better. maybe I stay with DX12 then for a while....

That's a pretty high number of Mhz (7700). Lots of noise I guess?

It is taste, I agree, I like the "smart" sharping" but I will try your  "Anisotropic Filtering" option as its rings a bell, I did this before at some point and thought the same as you Ed, thanks for that.

Yes DX12 imo has better lighting and temp are far better, all I see now when I finished testing was I am GPU bound.
